Hello readers! Another week of National Football League action has come and gone. The week that was brought us such storylines like: an upset in Green Bay, a close call in Chicago, a Bayou return for Joe Burrow, and a return trip for Tom Brady to the Steel City. All these storylines and more in this week's recap post.
Week 6 Recap
Washington 12, Chicago 7: TW: Commanders; CV: Commanders
At least there was a touchdown scored in this Thursday night game. Carson Wentz came into this game being one of the better quarterbacks in racking up passing yards, in this game he would put up 99 yards. Along with 12 of 22 passing. Brian Robinson Jr is an interesting story. Two months ago he suffered a gunshot wound. Last week he made his first start at running back. In this game, he scored Washington's only offensive touchdown. Washington would get 214 total yards for the night. Justin Fields would have a better game stats wise from Wentz. The former Buckeye would hit 14 of 27 passes for 190 yards with a touchdown pass to his wide out Dante Pettis on a 40-yard deep pass. Fields would take advantage of a Washington miscommunication where they had too many men on the field. An interception was thrown by Fields that was pass defensed and recovered by Jonathan Allen. Chicago had a great day running the ball as Fields put up 88 yards rushing, including a 39-yard run that looked like it would go the distance late in the 4th quarter. Khalil Herbert had 75 yards rushing with a 64-yard long run. David Montgomery had 67 yards rushing on 15 carries. The Bears had the chance to take the lead but a Darnell Mooney pass would come up just inches short of the goal line. For the Commanders, they get a win that sends them up to a 2-4 record but still a distance away from the Cowboys, Giants, and Eagles for the NFC East division race. For the Bears, they drop to 2-4 with the Detroit Lions staring at them in their rear view mirror.
Next week:
Washington: vs Green Bay
Chicago: @ New England (Monday night)
TW: 1-0; CV: 1-0
Cincinnati 30, New Orleans 26: TW: Bengals; CV: Bengals
Joe Burrow returns to the SuperDome for the first time since January 2020. The former LSU Tiger completed 28 of 37 passes for an even 300 yards with three touchdown passes. Two of them would go to Tiger teammate Ja'Marr Chase on a 60-yard and 15-yard plays. The former being the game-deciding score with 2:10 left in the game. Burrow would also run into the endzone for a run on 19 yards. Joe Mixon would rush for 45 yards and get 23 receiving yards with a touchdown catch. Andy Dalton would get the start for the Saints. The former Bengal would complete 17 of 32 passes for 162 yards with a touchdown pass to Trequan Smith in the 1st quarter on a pass down the middle. It was a struggling 2022 season for Alvin Kamara but he would get 99 yards rushing in the game. Rashid Shaheed would show his speed on a 44-yard run for a touchdown. For the Bengals, the win gets them back up to 3-3 and a 1st place tie with the Ravens. For the Saints, they fall to 2-4 with an offense that should be better but sadly isn't. They haven't scored a touchdown in the 2nd half since Week 18 of 2021.
Next week:
Cincinnati: vs Atlanta
New Orleans: @ Arizona (Thursday night)
TW: 2-0; CV: 2-0
Baltimore 20, NY Giants 24: TW: Giants; CV: Giants
Another blown lead, another loss for Baltimore, rinse and repeat. Lamar Jackson was effective in this game as he completed 17 of 32 passes for 210 yards with a touchdown pass to Mark Andrews on a 12-yard short pass in the 4th quarter. He would also toss an interception in the game. The Giants defense would make things uncomfortable for him in the pocket but they would only sack Jackson two times. Kenyan Drake rushed for 119 yards with a touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Lamar Jackson had 77 yards rushing. Daniel Jones showed poise about him as he completed 19 of 27 passes for 173 yards with two touchdowns to Wandale Robinson on a 5-yard play in the 2nd quarter. The 2nd touchdown pass would be a toss to Daniel Bellinger that would cut the Ravens lead to three points. Saquon Barkley would have the last say in the Giants victory as his 1-yard run for the touchdown would give the Giants the lead and the win along with his 83 yards rushing. For the Ravens, the loss drops them back to .500 as the Bengals also won today. For the Giants, they look for real as they move to a surprising 5-1 record.
Next week:
Baltimore: vs Cleveland
NY Giants: @ Jacksonville
TW: 3-0; CV: 3-0
Jacksonville 27, Indianapolis 34: TW: Jaguars; CV: Jaguars
It was a battle but the Colts come out on top. Trevor Lawrence would have a near flawless completion percentage as he completed 20 of 22 passes for 163 yards with a touchdown pass to Christian Kirk in the 4th quarter that gave the Jags a 1-point lead with 2:48 left. Lawrence would add two rushing touchdowns to the tally as he would get 23 yards from the ground. Travis Etienne would get 86 yards. Jamycal Hasty would make haste as he ran for a 61-yard score. Matt Ryan has had a struggle this season but he would raise hell on the Jaguars defense. The passer torched the Jags for 389 yards with three touchdown passes on 42 of 58 passes. Deon Jackson would have the rushing workload as he rushed for 42 yards with a touchdown run on 12 carries. The game-winning score would come from a Matt Ryan to Alec Pierce deep pass for a 32-yard play with 23 seconds left. The Colts would succeed on the two-point conversion. For the Jaguars, it is their 3rd straight loss after starting the season with a 2-1 record and things don't get any easier the rest of the way. For the Colts, it is their third win in four games as they go 3-2-1 in 2022.
Next week:
Jacksonville: vs NY Giants
Indianapolis: @ Tennessee
TW: 3-1; CV: 3-1
Minnesota 24, Miami 16: TW: Vikings; CV: Vikings
The heat would bare down for both teams in Miami. Kirk Cousins complete 20 of 30 passes for 175 yards with two touchdowns. The first would come on a short pass to his tight end Isiah Smith and the 2nd would come on a Adam Thielen catch early in the 4th quarter. Dalvin Cook was quiet for the most part in the game but would bring on the heat as the runner would go the distance for 53 yards for a touchdown with 3:25 left in the game. Skylar Thompson would get the start for the Dolphins and would hit 7 of 13 passes for 89 yards. Teddy Bridgewater would come into the game and provided 329 yards with two touchdowns in the 4th quarter. The former Viking would have two passes picked off. Raheem Mostert would have 49 yards rushing for the Dolphins. At one point in the game, the temperature on the Vikings sideline was around 120 degrees while the Dolphins in the shade had around 90 degrees of temperature. For the Vikings, it is fourth straight win after the deliberating loss to the Eagles. For the Dolphins, the loss drops them to 3-3 after going on a 3-0 start.
Next week:
Minnesota: Bye
Miami: vs Pittsburgh (Sunday night)
TW: 4-1; CV: 4-1
New England 38, Cleveland 15: TW: Patriots; CV: Patriots
The Pats would start off slow but the Pats would turn on the heat on a cool 60-degree day in Cleveland. Bailey Zappe, the toast of the town, was great as the passer completed 24 of 34 passes for 309 yards with two touchdown passes to Hunter Henry and Tyquan Thornton. Zappe's play the last few weeks will surely start a quarterback controversy. Tyquan Thornton also had a touchdown on a 19-yard run. The day would belong to Rhamondre Stevenson as the bruiser racked up 76 yards with two touchdowns. One of them would be from a 31-yard run that would catch the Browns defense with their pants down. Jacoby Brissett would complete 21 of 45 passes for 266 yards against his former team. He would toss a pass to Amari Cooper for 15-yards in the 4th quarter. Brissett would get picked off two times. The Pats defense would force three turnovers as Kyle Dugger and Jalen Mills would intercept Brissett and Deatrich Wise Jr would force a fumble. Nick Chubb, the AFC's leading rusher would get 56 yards from scrimmage. Kareem Hunt got 12 yards rushing. For the Patriots, it is their 2nd straight win after a horrid 1-3 start and Bill Belichick will have to make a decision on who will start under center. For the Browns, it is their 3rd straight loss after a good 2-1 start.
Next week:
New England: vs Chicago (Monday night)
Cleveland: @ Baltimore
TW: 5-1; CV: 5-1
NY Jets 27, Green Bay 10: TW: Packers; CV: Packers
Somewhere Fireman Ed is screaming J-E-T-S at the top of his lungs. Zach Wilson wanted the opportunity to face off against his boyhood idol Aaron Rodgers. In this game, he would do more than that. Wilson hit 10 of 18 passes for 110 yards. New York's running game, their spark, would put up 179 yards rushing in this game. Breece Hall had a monster game as he had 116 yards with a touchdown run of 34 yards that would put the game out of reach of the Packers. Michael Carter had 41 yards rushing. Bernard Berrios their versatile weapon would find the endzone on a 20-yard run Aaron Rodgers would struggle in this game but did have 26 of 41 passes completed for 246 yards with a touchdown pass to Alan Lazard late in the 3rd quarter. The Jets pass rush would make things uncomfortable for #12 as they sacked Rodgers four times. AJ Dillon rushed for 41 yards in the game for Green Bay. For the Jets, it is their third straight win as they have a 4-2 record to be proud about. It is their best start since 2015. For the Packers, the loss drops them to a 3-3 record that looks as ugly as their offense.
Next week:
NY Jets: @ Denver
Green Bay: @ Washington
TW: 5-2; CV: 5-2
San Francisco 14, Atlanta 28: TW: 49ers; CV: 49ers
Props to the Falcons. Jimmy Garoppolo had a meager game as the passer completed 29 of 41 passes for 296 yards with two touchdown passes to Brandon Aiyuk in the 2nd quarter. San Francisco's running attack, one of their strengths, was held to 50 total yards. Jeff Wilson had the majority of the yardage with 25 yards. Atlanta took advantage of turnovers that the 49ers gave them as Jimmy Garoppolo gave the ball twice to players in red helmets and a Jeff Wilson fumble that was recovered by Jaylinn Hawkins. Marcus Mariota had a near flawless day in passing the ball as he completed 13 of 14 passes for 129 yards with two touchdown passes. His lone incompletion would come in the 4th quarter. Kyle Pitts and Mycole Pruitt were the recipients of Mariota's passes. Marcus Mariota would add a rushing touchdown to his game on a 3-yard run to the right. Caleb Huntley rushed for 59 yards and Tyler Allgeier rushed for 51 yards. For the 49ers, there were opportunities in the game to get the win but mistakes cost them those chances. They are back to 3-3. For the Falcons, the classic red helmets were a good luck charm as they make their way to a 3-3 record as well.
Next week:
San Francisco: vs Kansas City
Atlanta: @ Cincinnati
TW: 5-3; CV: 5-3
Tampa Bay 18, Pittsburgh 20: TW: Buccaneers; CV: Buccaneers
Tom Brady's return to the Steel City was just two points short. Brady completed 25 of 40 passes for a touchdown. The touchdown pass would go to Leonard Fournette on a pass for an 11-yard pass that would cut the Steeler lead to two points. On the ensuing two-point conversion, Brady tried to make a connection to Chris Godwin but would fall incomplete. Leonard Fournette rushed for 63 yards on 21 carries. Pittsburgh's issues have mostly stemmed from the person under center. Kenny Pickett, the rookie from the University of Pittsburgh, would hit 11 of 18 passes for 67 yards with a touchdown pass to Najee Harris on a 6-yard play. The drive ate up 6 minutes and 24 seconds. In the 3rd quarter, Pickett would get sent off due to a concussion. Mitchell Trubisky would come in for relief. Trubisky would not falter as the passer hit 9 of 12 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown pass to Chase Claypool that would give the Steelers a 20-12 lead. Najee Harris had 42 yards rushing in the game. For the Buccaneers, the 2022 campaign screeches to a halt as they drop to 3-3. For the Steelers, the win puts them at 2-4, their first win since Week 1 against the Bengals.
Next week:
Tampa Bay: @ Carolina
Pittsburgh: @ Miami (Sunday night)
TW: 5-4; CV: 5-4
Arizona 9, Seattle 19: TW: Cardinals; CV: Cardinals
Rashaad Penny out and rookie Kenneth Walker III in for the Seahawks. Kyler Murray hit 23 of 37 passes for 222 yards with an interception that was grabbed by Tariq Woolen. Murray would play running back as he had 100 yards rushing on 10 carries. His longest run was for 42 yards. Elijah Benjamin had 37 yards rushing. Arizona was dismal on 3rd and 4th down conversions as they were 4 of 16 and 1 of 5 in converting those downs. Geno Smith was effective but the Cardinals defense limited his opportunities for big plays. The passer completed 20 of 31 passes for 197 yards. The star of the game was running back Kenneth Walker III who rushed for 97 yards with a touchdown run on 21 carries. It was his first start since Rashaad Penny was ruled out for the season due to a broken leg. Seahawks kicker Jason Myers would supply the rest of Seattle's points as he was 4 for 4 in field goals. For the Cardinals, the loss makes their postseason prospects a bit less rosy as they're now 2-4. For the Seahawks, the win puts them with a 1st place tie with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West at a 3-3 record.
Next week:
Arizona: vs New Orleans (Thursday night)
Seattle: @ LA Chargers
TW: 5-5; CV: 5-5
Carolina 10, LA Rams 24: TW: Rams; CV: Rams
The Panthers would not find the spark that the firing of head coach Matt Rhule would have. PJ Walker would get the start as Baker Mayfield was out with injury and Sam Darnold was still on rehab. Walker would provide only 60 yards passing on 10 of 16 completions. Jacob Eason would also see action as he completed three of five passes for 59 yards with an interception that would happen in the 4th quarter. Christian McCaffrey would provide a nice 69 yards rushing on 13 carries. Wide receiver Robbie Anderson would see himself out as he got into an argument with interim head coach Steve Wilks and receivers coach Joe Dailey in the 3rd quarter. He would spend the rest of the game in the locker room. It was not all doom and gloom for the Panthers as they did get a a pick-six from Donte Jackson from 30 yards. Matthew Stafford completed 26 of 33 passes for 253 yards with a touchdown pass to Allen Robinson from five yards. He would throw said interception. Darrell Henderson would get a modest game of 43 yards but did end up seeing the endzone. Ben Skowronek would also find the endzone with a 17-yard run that would give the Rams a 16-10 lead late in the 4th quarter. Cooper Kupp would catch seven passes for 80 yards. For the Panthers, the hopes of a Wilks debut win fell short but the gloom of a 1-5 record stares at them. For the Rams, they're back to a 3-3 record taking one game at a time.
Next week:
Carolina: vs Tampa Bay
LA Rams: Bye
TW: 6-5; CV: 6-5
Buffalo 24, Kansas City 20: TW: Chiefs; CV: Bills
At Arrowhead Stadium, the Bills would find some measure of revenge against the Chiefs. Josh Allen started off slow at first but would heat up to complete 27 of 40 passes for 329 yards with three touchdown passes. The first would go to Gabe Davis on a 34-yard pass. The 2nd would go to Stefon Diggs who finished the game with 148 yards receiving. The third and final pass went to Dawson Knox that proved to be the game-winning score for Buffalo. Devin Singletary had 85 yards rushing on 17 carries. Patrick Mahomes completed 25 of 40 passes for 338 yards with two touchdown passes. The first went to Juju Smith-Schuster who looked like he would be tackled by three white jerseys then made a move to avoid the tacklers that would send him to the endzone. The 2nd pass went to Mecole Hardman. It was a game that lived up to the hype but those who wanted a shootout were surely to be disappointed. For the Bills, the win sends them to the best record in the AFC with a 5-1 record. For the Chiefs, the loss might cost them in playoff seeding towards later in the season.
Next week:
Buffalo: Bye
Kansas City: @ San Francisco
TW: 6-6; CV: 7-5
Dallas 17, Philadelphia 26: TW: Eagles; CV: Eagles
It would be the defenses not the offenses that would dominate this game. Cooper Rush had a tall task ahead of him in this matchup. The shining star would dim as he completed just 18 of 38 passes for 181 yards with a touchdown pass to Jake Ferguson late in the 4th quarter on a short pass. The score would eventually cut the Eagle lead to three. Rush would feel the rush as the Eagles pass defense picked off Rush three times, a few of them were just tipped passes that would get grabbed by players in green jerseys. Ezekiel Elliot would find some holes as he rushed for 81 yards with a touchdown run. Jalen Hurts was efficient in this game as he completed 15 of 25 passes for 155 yards with two touchdowns to AJ Brown and Devonta Smith. Miles Sanders had 71 yards rushing with a touchdown while Jalen Hurts had just 27 yards. Dallas' defense has to be given props as they would hold the Eagles to 268 total yards in the game. For the Cowboys, the loss would mark Cooper Rush's undefeated record as a starter to an end as well as the Cowboys four-game winning streak. For the Eagles, the 6-0 start is their 2nd best since 2004 and the undefeated season will last for another week.
Next week:
Dallas: vs Detroit
Philadelphia: Bye
TW: 7-6; CV: 8-5
Denver 16, LA Chargers 19: TW: Chargers; CV: Chargers
Russell Wilson would duke it out at Week 6's wild conclusion. Wilson completed 15 of 28 passes for 188 yards with a touchdown pass to Greg Dulcich in the first quarter. Latavius Murray had 66 yards rushing in the game. Jerry Jeudy had 54 yards receiving for the Broncos. It was still a lackluster effort on offense for the Broncos as they would only put up 13 first downs and converted four times on 3rd down. Justin Herbert completed 37 of 57 passes in a night where the passer would be called upon time and again. He finished with 238 passing yards with an interception. Austin Ekeler would score the only touchdown for the Chargers on short run up the middle that would cut the Bronco lead to three points with a 10-7 score. It was not a pretty night on offense for the Chargers either. If you threw the ball 57 times you'd probably have at least more than 238 yards for sure. Separation from the defense was an issue for Herbert and the Chargers. Thankfully for Brandon Staley and the Chargers, they had a clutch kicker in Dustin Hopkins. Hopkins would hit a 39-yard field goal that would give the Chargers the win in overtime. For the Broncos, it is another loss where the offense was on the bench more than its defense with a 2-4 record staring at them. For the Chargers, it was a win but an ugly win but the good news is they have a 4-2 record to be somewhat happy about.
