NFL 2020 Week 9 Picks

 Hello readers! Another week of National Football League action is soon upon us! The week features a few games to keep an eye on like: an NFC Championship rematch and the 2nd Brady-Brees matchup this season. I'll give you my picks for this week's games. Let's get to work!

Week 9 Picks

Week 9 of the NFL's regular season starts in Santa Clara, California and ends in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The week features a 14-game slate. It includes a Thursday night game, eight early games, three late games, a Sunday night game and a Monday night game. CBS will have the double-header and FOX will have the single, regional game. Cincinnati, Cleveland, LA Rams, and Philadelphia have byes this week. Let's get to the picks!

Green Bay (5-2) @ San Francisco (4-4) (FOX/NFL Network): TW: Packers; CV: Packers
Both teams lost last week as the Packers lost to the Vikings and the 49ers lost to the Seahawks. If the 49ers had more of their stars playing instead of injury, I would be going in a different direction. Green Bay will be getting Aaron Jones back and typically the Packers do well in games after a loss. The 49ers are going to need a boost from their running game if they want to beat Green Bay. I don't see it happening but anything is possible. 

Detroit (3-4) @ Minnesota (2-5) (CBS): TW: Vikings; CV: Vikings
The Lions lost to the Colts and the Vikings beat the Packers last week. Oddly enough this game is on CBS and not FOX. The winner of this game could be taking 3rd in the division. Dalvin Cook had a monster game last week and I would expect him to do damage again this week. Kirk Cousins did enough to get the dub last week and the Vikes will need him to play more of an aggressive style than playing field general. At last throw no interceptions. I'll take the Vikes in this one. 

Denver (3-4) @ Atlanta (2-6) (CBS): TW: Broncos; CV: Falcons
Both teams got wins as the Broncos beat the Chargers and the Falcons beat the Panthers last week. Denver has been somewhat of a disappointment this year but in light of this disappointment they did manage to pull a win out of their ass against LA. The Falcons have been even more of a disappointment as they can't even hold onto any lead that is more than manageable. Both teams look similar on paper except in the quarterback position. Drew Lock will need to play better the whole game to beat this Falcons team. 

Houston (1-6) @ Jacksonville (1-6) (CBS): TW: Texans; CV: Jaguars
Both teams were on a bye last week. Both teams are terrible in terms of record but other than that they both seem similar. The game could really come down to whoever can control the clock and get points on the board as both teams have balance on both sides of the ball. The question is how good can their defenses can be. I know I don't pick you often Jacksonville but I just have the gut feeling that the Texans will pick up a win. Can't go wrong with DeShaun Watson. 

NY Giants (1-7) @ Washington (2-5) (FOX): TW: Giants; CV: Football Team
The Giants lost to the Buccaneers and the Football Team was on a bye last week. Last time these two teams played, the Giants won. New York made some good strides against Brady's Buccaneers. Whether or not that will translate into this game will remain to be seen. Washington does have the benefit of having the week off so perhaps they could make this game into an interesting one. I feel the Giants will win but its the NFC East so anything could really happen. Fuck this division.

Seattle (6-1) @ Buffalo (6-2) (FOX): TW: Seahawks; CV: Bills
Both teams won last week as the Seahawks beat the 49ers and the Bills beat the Patriots. Wilson vs Allen. This Seattle team has relatively no real weakness that makes them vulnerable other than their suspect pass defense at times but on offense they have many weapons. Let alone Russell Wilson's arm and legs. I don't see the Seahawks losing this game based on their offense and stingy defense. Josh Allen will have his hands full in this one. 

Chicago (5-3) @ Tennessee (5-2) (FOX): TW: Titans; CV: Titans
The Bears lost to the Saints and the Titans lost to the Bengals last week. Chicago looked overall sloppy last week but so did Tennessee against the Bengals. Chicago will need Nick Foles to have a bounce back game and keep the Bears offense going as the Titans will eat up clock like no other with Derrick Henry and Ryan Tannehill on offense. Turnovers will be key and if Nick Foles throws interceptions then this one will be hard to come back form. 

Carolina (3-5) @ Kansas City (7-1) (FOX): TW: Chiefs; CV: Chiefs
The Panthers lost to the Falcons and the Chiefs beat the Jets last week. Not giving Carolina a long shot in this one as the Chiefs on offense look spectacular. KC's defense can be suspect at times but outside of the Raiders loss earlier this season, they look good. Teddy Bridgewater and his receiving corp will need to figure out a way to keep themselves on the field and keep Patrick Mahomes off it. Good luck Carolina.

Baltimore (5-2) @ Indianapolis (5-2) (CBS): TW: Ravens; CV: Ravens
The Ravens lost to the Steelers and the Colts beat the Lions last week. Baltimore last week could've put a hold on their rival but their achilles heel in Lamar Jackson's turnover problems eventually took its toll. I sense the Ravens will rebound against their rival Colts this week. Phillip Rivers and company has had the benefit of the doubt against a terrible division. Their defense could put up a fight against the Ravens offense. I'll take the safer route in Baltimore than the pass-happy Phillip Rivers. 

Las Vegas (4-3) @ LA Chargers (2-5) (FOX): TW: Raiders; CV: Chargers
The Raiders beat the Browns and the Chargers lost to the Broncos. Both teams maybe in different cities but the rivalry remains. Justin Herbert has been a fun watch as he was practically thrown into the lions den and somehow survived and thrived. Without a running game and a defense that can't hold onto a 20+ lead, I can't trust the Chargers to beat their rival Raiders. I'll take the Raiders.

Miami (4-3) @ Arizona (5-2) (CBS): TW: Cardinals; CV: Cardinals
The Dolphins beat the Rams and the Cardinals were on a bye last week. Tua Tagovailoa's first NFL start was somewhat impressive despite his defense harkoning back to the days of the No Name Defense. Not also to mention their stellar play on special teams. I'll take the Cardinals based on their offense but even Kyler Murray has been suspect in protecting the football via interceptions. Only question is how well the Cardinals defense can play against Tua. 

Pittsburgh (7-0) @ Dallas (2-6) (CBS): TW: Steelers; CV: Steelers
The Steelers beat the Ravens and the Cowboys lost to the Eagles last week. It's the Yinzer's vs America's Team. While this game isn't the Super Bowl, the history that these two teams share remains. Ben DiNucci could very well be benched in this game which means that anyone could possibly become quarterback for the Cowboys. The Steelers offense is playing well and Ben Roethlisberger has played up to expectation despite playing horrible at Tennessee a few weeks ago. Nevertheless I don't see Pittsburgh losing against a sad excuse of a team. 

New Orleans (5-2) @ Tampa Bay (6-2) (NBC): TW: Buccaneers; CV: Buccaneers
Both teams won last week as the Saints beat the Bears and the Buccaneers beat the Giants. The Sunday primetime game looks to be a fairly entertaining watch as Drew Brees and Tom Brady go head-to-head again in this one. Both teams look really good on paper. I'm taking Tampa is because they're at home and the Saints have been suspect in sustaining drives. I also like the Buccaneers defense against the offensive line in New Orleans. Should be a good game. 

New England (2-5) @ NY Jets (0-8) (ESPN): TW: Patriots; CV: Patriots
Both teams lost last week as the Patriots lost to the Bills and the Jets lost to the Chiefs. Week 9 finishes up with a doozy of a Patriots-Jets game. These games in years past have been dominated by the Patriots with a few Jets squeaker wins here and there. This year is a bit different in that the Pats are vulnerable of possibly having a losing season for the first time since 2000. I'm taking New England based on their few exciting pieces on offense and as long as Cam Newton doesn't turn over the ball as much as he has, I think the Pats will pull it off. Jets could very well get their first win as many of the Patriots stars have left. I feel the Patriots will win.

NFL 2018 Week 9 Picks

Hello readers! The time has come yet again to write up and post a column for the National Football League's 9th week of competition. The 9th week of the season is the mid-way point of the year, pretty much from here on out the week's get to the double digits and the playoff picture gets a bit clearer. We're still a few weeks away from really getting into the "playoffs" discussion. In this column, I'll talk about trades in the NFL, a recap of the trade deadline's moves, and of course the picks.

Trades in the NFL

When it comes to trades in sports, you usually hear more about trade news from such sports leagues like the NBA, MLB, and the NHL. A trade in the NFL, you don't really hear about it as much. Most often than not the reason for this is that the season is shorter, most teams are happy with what they have on their rosters, and the draft picks are in general more valuable as you can find a diamond in the rough than the other sports. Not also to mention that you have a free farm system in the NCAA to back you up.

If a team would trade something, that specific team would trade their player for a future draft pick. The name of the game is what you get out of that trade than what you give. If you trade your star wide receiver for a lower round draft pick (like a 5th rounder) then it wouldn't be as valuable since you get to pick later in the draft. It's all about relative value.

Secondary help in Washington, running back depth in Baltimore, and more.

The Green Bay Packers perhaps made the big news on trade deadline day as they would send Ha-Ha Clinton Dix and Ty Montgomery to Washington and Baltimore respectively. Clinton-Dix, the 5th year man out of Alabama, has recorded 27 tackles with three interceptions. Montgomery, ran the ball 26 times for 105 yards and a touchdown on the season. The Packers received a 4th-round pick for Clinton-Dix and a 7th-round 2020 pick for Montgomery.

A couple of wide receivers also got traded. Demaryius Thomas was traded to the Houston Texans for a 4th and 7th round picks. Denver would also trade a 7th-round pick to Houston as well. Thomas has received 402 yards and three touchdowns on the season. Golden Tate would be traded to Philadelphia for a 2019 3rd round pick. Golden Tate has 517 yards receiving for three touchdowns on the season. As far as who was the real winner of it all, it would be the Oakland Raiders. We shall see if these moves pay off for these teams in the future.

Cool video of the week

This week's cool of the week is a sort of a throwback to what the NFL was like 10 years ago. The NFL was a totally different place in 2008. Such things were: Tom Brady was out for the season due to a knee injury, the Patriots would not win the AFC East, Vince Young was a promising star in the league, Marshawn Lynch was playing for the Buffalo Bills, Brett Favre was traded to the Jets, and a promising quarterback named Aaron Rodgers would start his first full season in the NFL. The Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Giants, and the Philadelphia Eagles are on a bye week. CBS will have the single, regional game, and FOX will have the doubleheader. There will be a Thursday night game, seven early games, three late games, a Sunday night game, and a Monday night game. A total of 13 games. Let's get to the picks!

Oakland (1-6) @ San Francisco (1-7) (FOX/NFL Network): TW: Raiders; CV: Raiders

Both teams took losses last week as the Raiders lost to the Colts and the 49ers to the Cardinals. I might go on a whim and give the Raiders a nod in the matchup. CJ Beathard could not be starting due to a wrist injury and if that's the case then Nick Mullens would get the nod. The Raiders have some stability on the quarterback with Derek Carr and the Raiders defense could have a decent game against the Niners. Really bad game for Thursday night, which sadly goes together. 

Chicago (4-3) @ Buffalo (2-6) (FOX): TW: Bears; CV: Bears

The Bears got a win against the Jets and the Bills lost to the Patriots last week respectively. The Bears have been playing well on offense and had a rebound game against the Jets last week after giving up 30+ points to the Dolphins and Patriots. I feel the Bears will dominate on both sides of the ball as the Bills have no real answer on offense and their defense could give some trouble to the Bears but I'm not holding my breath on the Bills getting the upset. 

Pittsburgh (4-2-1) @ Baltimore (4-4) (CBS): TW: Steelers; CV: Steelers 

The Steelers got a win against the Browns and the Ravens lost to the Panthers last week. The game will come down to the Steelers offense vs the Ravens defense. Which one will break the other? Ultimately I like the Steelers chances in this one. If the Steelers can make a few big plays against the Ravens defense, with either Antonio Brown and James Conner helming the offense for Pittsburgh, I'll take them. The Ravens could very well win the game as well since they are at home. It's a huge game for both teams if they want to gain some ground on each other in the division. 

Atlanta (3-4) @ Washington (5-2) (FOX): TW: Redskins; CV: Redskins

Falcons were on a bye week and the Redskins got a win against the Giants last week. The game will come down to which offense shows up for the Redskins. Washington is 25th in overall offense on the season. The defense should be fine as they did pick up Ha Ha Clinton-Dix from the Packers this week. Alex Smith will need to step up in the air attack as the Falcons will try to focus on Adrian Peterson and try to shut him down. I'll take the Redskins due to their running attack and tight defense. 

Detroit (3-4) @ Minnesota (4-3-1) (FOX): TW: Vikings; CV: Vikings

Both teams took losses last week as the Lions lost to the Seahawks and the Vikings to the Saints. The game will come down to which team shows up for the Vikings. Will it be a dominating defensive effort for the Vikings or will it be like last week's Saints game for them? In a tight divisional race, I'll give the Vikes a benefit of the doubt as they still have a solid defense and an offense that can get going in a hurry. Give me the Purple & Gold. 

Kansas City (7-1) @ Cleveland (2-5-1) (CBS): TW: Chiefs; CV: Chiefs

The Chiefs got a win against the Broncos and the Browns lost to the Steelers last week respectively. The game will come down to if the Chiefs can avoid the trap game and get a win a hostile Cleveland crowd. If the Browns can avoid doing Browns things then they have a chance in the game. I can't hold my breath as the Browns did get rid of Hue Jackson earlier in the week. I'll take the Mahomes Train for another week. 

NY Jets (3-5) @ Miami (4-4) (CBS): TW: Dolphins; CV: Jets

Both teams got losses last week the Jets lost to the Bears and the Dolphins to the Texans. The game is really and truly a toss-up game. Not based on the fact that both teams are good, but that they're really bad. I'm only really taking the Dolphins because they're at home and the Dolphins offense is slightly better than the Jets. Not also to mention the last time that both teams were playing each other, Sam Darnold had a terrible game. 

Tampa Bay (3-4) @ Carolina (5-2) (FOX): TW: Panthers; CV: Panthers

The Buccaneers lost to the Bengals and the Panthers got a win against the Ravens. The game will come down to who will start for the Buccaneers this Sunday. Will it be Ryan Fitzpatrick or Jameis Winston? Such questions at quarterback have me questioning on if they can win. I'll take the Panthers in this one as they have a fun offense to watch and can play defense with the big boys (13th overall defense). Cam Newton could have a big game. 

Houston (5-3) @ Denver (3-5) (CBS): TW: Texans; CV: Texans

The Texans got a win against the Dolphins and the Broncos lost to the Chiefs last week. The game will feature a return of Demaryius Thomas to Denver. The game could be quite the offensive showcase for both teams but they also play good defense as well. Vegas as the Broncos as a 1-point favorite in the game. It's really a toss-up matchup. 

LA Chargers (5-2) @ Seattle (4-3) (CBS): TW: Chargers; CV: Chargers

The Chargers were on a bye and the Seahawks beat the Lions last week. The game is a really good matchup if you do enjoy offense vs defense. I like the Chargers in the matchup as they have a versatile offense, and it will depend on if they can have success against the Seahawks defense as it is ranked 5th in overall defense. The game will really come down to which team can control the line of scrimmage more. 

LA Rams (8-0) @ New Orleans (6-1) (FOX): TW: Saints; CV: Rams

Both teams got wins last week as the Rams beat the Packers and the Saints beat the Vikings. The game is the marquee game of the early/late games as both teams offenses are very stellar. The only question will be whether or not the Saints defense can rise to the challenge of stopping the Rams running game and forcing the Rams into being a one-dimensional offense. If they can do that they have a shot at forcing the Rams to lose for the first time this season, thus laying the ghosts of the 1972 Dolphins to rest for another year. Geaux Saints!

Green Bay (3-3-1) @ New England (6-2) (NBC): TW: Packers; CV: Patriots

The Packers lost to the Rams and the Patriots beat the Bills last week. The game is certainly a good one on paper but as far as both defenses goes, not so much. The two offenses feature two quarterbacks that wear #12 and are both quite good. The game will come down to which defense can step up and give their team's offense the best chance to win the game as both offenses will put points on the board. Don't let me down for another week, please Packers! 

Tennessee (3-4) @ Dallas (3-4) (ESPN): TW: Cowboys; CV: Cowboys

Both teams were on a bye last week. The week finishes up with a decent matchup in Texas. The Cowboys will have a new weapon in Amari Cooper to showcase how well he can run against a Titans defense that is ranked 11th in the league. The game will come down to which offense shows up to play. I'll take the Cowboys in the game as they might get a boost in the passing attack with Cooper in their lineup, as well as Ezekiel Elliot doing Ezekiel Elliot things.

NFL Week 9 Picks

Hello readers! The post is somewhat later than usual but still well ahead of the Thursday night game. In typical weeks I would have the post up by Wednesday but watching the World Series this year has been intoxicating. Nonetheless with the baseball season over it is now time to focus on football.

In the week that was week eight in picks was a very close contest. Before last week's action I had a 1 game edge in picks with Cardinal Viking. After last week with our picks very close together, it would be surely a close one again. Here are the results:

Me:
12-1: (only loss was the Dolphins getting shut out to the Ravens, wtf).

Cardinal Viking:

11-2: (picked the Dolphins and picked the Lions over the Steelers).

What would normally be a normal week for some teams, the past week would prove to be a make or break time for some. With the trade deadline past, some teams look to give up their future to pick up the short-term solution for their teams. NFL trades don't tend to get the same spark as NBA or MLB trades, but they would prove to be a deciding factor when draft picks are involved. Here's a recap:

Philadelphia Eagles pick up Jay Ajayi from the Miami Dolphins for a 4th rounder (train robbery).

New England trades Jimmy Garoppolo to San Francisco for a 2nd round pick (guess they couldn't keep him.

Buffalo Bills pick up Kelvin Benjamin from the Carolina Panthers for a 3rd and 7th round pick (could be an interesting strategy)

A difficult decision has come to my attention. Something that has been apparent since I started on this blog post. What is this week's cool video? Well out of random here it is:

There will be six teams on bye week: Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, Los Angeles Chargers, Cleveland Browns, and New England Patriots. There will be a Thursday night game, 7 early games, 3 late games, a Sunday night game, and a Monday night game. CBS will handle the early and late doubleheader, while FOX will have the single game this week. Here are the picks:

Buffalo @ NY Jets: Bills. The Bills come off a win against the Raiders, while the Jets lost to the Falcons. The week starts out in East Rutherford and the Bills coming to town looking improved I personally like the Bills winning the matchup based on that Tyrod Taylor picked up a new weapon in Kelvin Benjamin this week. Unfortunately Benjamin will not play tonight but the Bills got this.

Atlanta @ Carolina: Falcons. Both teams come off wins last week as the Falcons beat the Jets, and the Panthers beat the Buccaneers. The game could come down to which offense puts the most points as this will be a shootout, the Falcons have been downplaying this year and I still am expecting them to finally put up a offensive performance this Sunday, their defense is suspect. More suspect than Colonel Mustard in the library with a knife.

Baltimore @ Tennessee: Ravens. The Ravens won last week against the Dolphins while the Titans were on bye week last week. The Ravens are a complicated team to predict and pick. Last week I picked against them and they win. The game will come down to which team's running back will have the better game as both teams are top 10 in rush offense, and when you have a good rushing attack, you can open it up in the pass, and that will be another factor.

Cincinnati @ Jacksonville: Jaguars. The Jaguars come off a bye week last week while the Bengals come off a win against the Colts. The game will be at Jacksonville where the Jags are 1-2 at home this season, I feel the Jags will put on their best game of the season against the Bengals, who barely squeaked by last week against a bad Colts team. Give me the Jaguars!

Denver @ Philadelphia: Eagles. The Eagles won last week against the Niners and the Broncos lost to the Chiefs. The game features the season debut of Brock Osweiler, who replaces a struggling Trevor Siemian, who will get the start. The Eagles haven't let me down so far this season and I feel good with them in this game.

Indianapolis @ Houston: Colts. Both teams come off losses as the Colts lost to the Bengals and the Texans to the Sehawks This would normally be a shocker to some people on why I'm picking the Colts, well Deshaun Watson tearing his ACL will be a big factor in the game. Watson has been a shining light for the Texans offensively which normally was a defensive team. I could be wrong but there's a reason why they're predictions.

LA Rams @ NY Giants: Rams. Both teams are coming off a bye week last week. The game is certainly a tale of two teams. The surprising Rams and the disappointing Giants. The Rams have been playing well during the stretch so far we will have to see if the bye week does limit their focus and preparation. Give me the Rams!

Tampa Bay @ New Orleans: Saints. The Saints come off a win against the Bears while the Buccaneers lost to the Panthers. Drew Brees still can throw the ball, Mark Ingram can still run the ball and if the Saints defense limits the offensive attack of the Bucs, then I like the Saints chances. Plus, the Superdome is quite a homefield advantage.

Arizona @ San Francisco: 49ers. The Cardinals are coming off a bye week last week while the Niners lost to the Eagles. The team by the bay picked up possibly their future starting QB in Jimmy Garopollo from the Patriots. Unfortunately the rest of the team isn't that good and probably won't be that good for a while. However, I feel the Niners will finally get their first win of the season by beating the Cardinals without Carson Palmer.

Washington @ Seattle: Seahawks. The Seahawks won against the Texans and the Redskins lost to the Cowboys last week. The 12th man will be pretty loud this week, I feel the Redskins will come off a loss again this week. The Seahawks always seem to get better each and every week, however they need homefield advantage in the playoffs so they have to win.

Kansas City @ Dallas: Chiefs. Both teams come off wins last week as the Chiefs won against the Broncos and the Cowboys beat the Redskins. The marqee game of the late slate will be the Chiefs-Cowboys game. The game will be on CBS and will mark Tony Romo's return to AT&T Stadium as the color-commentator for the TV network. However I like the Chiefs in the game as the Cowboys defense is suspect, more than the offense though.

Oakland @ Miami: Raiders. Both teams come off losses last week as the Dolphins lost to the Ravens and the Raiders lost to the Bills. The Sunday night game will show two disappointing football teams but which team will be the ones that show up, I feel the Raiders will based on that Derek Carr could start and the Raiders need to win to keep up with the division.

Detroit @ Green Bay: Packers. The Lions come off a loss to the Steelers last week while the Packers come off a bye week. The Monday night game will feature two division rivals in the NFC North division as the Packers and Lions renew their old rivalry. The Lions still have their franchise quarterback on his own two feet while the Packers will look to have Brent Hundley at quarterback. The Packers need to win the game in order to stay in 2nd place against the Vikings in the division race. I like the receiving corp of the Packers to win it for them as they need to make the big play.
