NFL 2023 Week 1 Recap

Hello readers! Another week of National Football League action has come to an end. With the first week in the books teams have made their first stride towards the ultimate prize while teams have been put through a setback. Some exciting moments of the week include the Lions winning in Arrowhead, . In this post I will do a Week 1 Freaky Stat while doing the recap of the week's action. Let's get to work!

NFL Week 1 Freaky Stat

For the first time ever the Jaguars, Raiders, Browns and Lions are 1-0. At any point after 1995 when the Jacksonville Jaguars entered into the NFL either one of those teams finished Week 1 with either a 1-0 or 0-1 record. Also the Atlanta Falcons are above .500 for the first time since 2017.

NFL Week 1 Recap

Detroit 21, Kansas City 20: TW: Chiefs; CV: Lions
Celebration was abound in Kansas City as the Chiefs celebrated their championship banner raising. The team and their fans would turn sour as Travis Kelce was out with a hyperextended knee. As the game went on the Lions made some aggressive moves early going on 4th down one out of three successful tries. Detroit saw a solid performance from Jared Goff who completed 22 of 35 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown pass to Amon Ra St. Brown. David Montgomery, the former Bear, ran over the Chiefs defense for 74 yards with a touchdown on 21 carries. Josh Reynolds finished with 80 receiving yards for the Lions. The Chiefs would be missing two players needed to do well this season, Chris Jones and Travis Kelce. Chris Jones was missing due to a contract holdout. Patrick Mahomes threw 21 of 39 passes for 226 yards for two touchdowns and an ill-fated interception caught by Brian Branch that ran it back for a score. Mahomes did rush for 45 yards in the game getting him leading rusher honors. The lack of Travis Kelce on the field was felt as the leading receiver for the Chiefs was Marquez Valdes-Scantling with two catches for 48 yards. The loss is also Patrick Mahomes first Week 1 loss of his career. For the Lions, the 2023 campaign gets off to a good start with a 1-0 start. For the Chiefs, they look to get back to playing solid football with a 0-1 mark.

Next week:
Detroit: vs Seattle
Kansas City: @ Jacksonville

TW: 0-1; CV: 1-0

Carolina 10, Atlanta 24: TW: Falcons; CV: Falcons
Offensive yardage was limited in Atlanta. The Panthers had 281 total yards and the Falcons had 221 total yards. Bryce Young made his debut to the NFL. The former Alabama quarterback completed 20 of 38 passes for 146 yards for a touchdown pass to Hayden Hurst to give him his first touchdown pass in the NFL. Young would also toss two balls to Falcons players that would lead to Falcons scores. Miles Sanders put some numbers up in the game with 72 yards rushing on 18 carries. Chuba Hubbard had 60 yards rushing on nine carries, including a 21-yard run. Carolina struggled on 3rd down as they went 5 for 14 on those opportunities. Desmond Ridder wasn't as solid but he did alright. Ridder completed 15 of 18 passes for 115 yards with a touchdown to Bijan Robinson for his first receiving touchdown in the NFL. He also had 56 yards rushing. The stud for the Falcons was Tyler Allgeier who put up 75 yards rushing with two touchdowns. For the Panthers, the Frank Reich era ends on a whimper as they fall to 0-1. For the Falcons, they put up a good game of football as they go to 1-0.

Next week:
Carolina: vs New Orleans (Monday)
Atlanta: vs Green Bay

TW: 1-1; CV: 2-0

Arizona 16, Washington 20: TW: Commanders; CV: Commanders
The new era in Washington celebrates its first victory. The Joshua Harris regime, who bought the team a few months ago are truly thrilled about their newest purchase. The fanbase felt the same as FedEx Field was sold out for the first time in a long time. Journeyman Joshua Dobbs started for the Cardinals. He completed 21 of 30 passes for 132 yards. He felt the hurt as he was sacked three times and was on the trying end of holding onto the ball. James Conner had a decent game with 62 yards rushing with 14 carries. Arizona's lone touchdown was from a Sam Howell fumble that was recovered by Cameron Thomas for a 2-yard fumble-six. Matt Prater did the rest with hitting three field goals. Sam Howell started for the Commanders. He had 19 of 31 passes completed for 202 yards with a touchdown pass to Brian Robinson. Howell did also toss an interception and was sacked six times. Brian Robinson rushed for 59 yards with 19 carries. Sam Howell also showed off his legs with a touchdown run. For the Cardinals, the start to Jonathan Gannon will start off low as his team goes to 0-1. For the Commanders, the new regime will celebrate a 1-0 start.

Next week:
Arizona: vs NY Giants
Washington: @ Denver

TW: 2-1; CV: 3-0

Cincinnati 3, Cleveland 24: TW: Bengals; CV: Bengals
A pounding in the Dawg Pound in Cleveland. Joe Burrow who had signed a new deal prior to the season felt the brunt of the Browns defense. He completed only 14 of 31 passes for 82 yards. He would also get sacked two times. Joe Mixon had 56 yards rushing on 13 carries. Cincinnati was held to just 142 total yards. One reason for the offensive ineptitude would be the 3rd down conversions by the Bengals by the stat of 2 for 15. DeShaun Watson had a solid day in this game as he completed 16 of 29 passes for a touchdown pass and run and an interception. The touchdown pass would be a short pass to Harrison Bryant. Watson's touchdown run was from a sweep play that put forth a winning margin for the Browns. Nick Chubb had a good day with 106 yards rushing on 18 carries. The Browns had some better luck on 3rd down as they converted on 3rd down 4 of 14 times. For the Bengals, they had a rough game and will need to rebound as they stare at a 0-1 start. For the Browns, they get to a 1-0 start for the first time since 2004.

Next week:
Cincinnati: vs Baltimore
Cleveland: @ Pittsburgh (Monday)

TW: 2-2; CV: 3-1

Houston 9, Baltimore 25: TW: Ravens; CV: Ravens
The Ravens handle the Texans at home but at a cost. CJ Stroud made his debut in the NFL. The former Buckeye did alright in his debut with 28 of 44 passes for 242 yards passing. He didn't throw a touchdown pass but he didn't throw an interception either. Damien Pierce had 38 yards rushing on 11 carries. In the redzone, the Texans visited the area twice but couldn't put forth six points. They had to settle for three Kyle Fairbairn field goals. Lamar Jackson had 17 of 22 passes completed in his 2023 debut. He passed for 169 yards with an interception but also had 38 yards rushing. The Ravens running game had a good game in the scoring department as Justice Hill had two touchdowns with his feet and JK Dobbins had 22 yards rushing with a touchdown. He would also suffer an Achilles injury with season-ending implications. Heartbreaking for him and somewhat to my fantasy team. For the Texans, they showed some grit but in a league that looks at wins the most, they are sitting at a low 0-1. For the Ravens, the loss of Dobbins will hurt but they do have a decent 1-0 record.

Next week:
Houston: vs Indianapolis
Baltimore: @ Cincinnati

TW: 3-2; CV: 4-1

Jacksonville 31, Indianapolis 21: TW: Jaguars; CV: Jaguars
Business as usual for Trevor Lawrence and company. The quarterback from Clemson had a good day as he completed 24 of 32 passes for 241 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Calvin Ridley and Zay Jones were the recipients of those Lawrence passes for six points. It was also a good day for the Jaguars ground game as Travis Etienne had 77 yards rushing with a touchdown on a play up the middle on a 26-yarder that yielded results. Tank Bigsby (nice first name buddy) had a rushing touchdown. Anthony Richardson had his first start in the NFL. Richardson had 24 of 37 passes completed for 223 yards with a touchdown pass to Michael Pittman on a 39-yard play from the left. Richardson would also show off his running ability for a score while finishing the game with 40 yards rushing. The Colts defense had a fumble-six that would be recovered by DeForest Buckner for 26 yards. For the Jaguars, their 2023 season results with a 1-0 record. For the Colts, they tried to keep up but would falter as they go to 0-1.

Next week:
Jacksonville: vs Kansas City
Indianapolis: @ Houston

TW: 4-2; CV: 5-1

San Francisco 30, Pittsburgh 7: TW: Steelers; CV: 49ers
The big bruiser of the week was the 49ers defense shutting down the Steelers. Brock Purdy continued with his surprising start with 19 of 29 passes for 220 yards for two touchdown passes to Brandon Aiyuk. Aiyuk had 129 receiving yards for eight catches. Christian McCaffrey had a day as he rushed for 152 yards rushing with a touchdown run with 22 carries. The longest in the game was the 65-yard run that resulted in six points. The play was a result of a short drive to start the 2nd half on a run up the middle to the left. San Francisco had 391 total yards in the game. Kenny Pickett had a long day for the Steelers. Pickett had 31 of 46 passes completed for 232 yards with a touchdown pass to Pat Friermuth. He had two passes intercepted. Najee Harris had 31 yards rushing on six carries with a 24-yard run being the longest in the game for him. Pittsburgh had 239 total yards in the game. The Steelers offense was inept as they went 5 for 15 on 3rd down conversions with 41 total rushing yards on 10 plays. Not a pretty day for the Black and Gold. For the 49ers, the 2023 quest for a championship begins with a solid 1-0 start. For the Steelers, their offense needs some tweaking and will need to get better as they stare at 0-1.

Next week:
San Francisco: @ LA Rams
Pittsburgh: vs Cleveland (Monday)

TW: 4-3; CV: 6-1

Tampa Bay 20, Minnesota 17: TW: Vikings; CV: Vikings
The Bucs help slow down the scoring machine of the Vikings. Baker Mayfield would start off slow in the first half as his first start as a Buccaneer but in the 2nd half would get better. The former Oklahoma Sooner completed 21 of 34 passes for 173 yards with two touchdowns to Mike Evans and Trey Palmer. Tampa's running game would get a modest 73 total yards from the ground as Rashaad White got 40 of those 73 yards. In general, the Buccaneers put up only 242 total offensive yards. The Buccaneers defense took advantage of Vikings mistakes getting three turnovers. Those turnovers would come courtesy of Kirk Cousins who gave up two fumbles in the first half. Cousins did complete 33 of 44 passes for 344 yards and tossed two touchdowns to Alexander Mattison and rookie Jordan Addison for his first touchdown as a pro. Mattison did get 34 yards rushing in a limited effort. Minnesota outgained the Buccaneers with 369 total yards. For the Buccaneers, they survived and were awarded with a 1-0 start for 2023. For the Vikings, the rough game will be even rougher to stare at as they go to 0-1.

Next week:
Tampa Bay: vs Chicago
Minnesota: @ Philadelphia (Thursday)

TW: 4-4; CV: 6-2

Tennessee 15, New Orleans 16: TW: Titans; CV: Titans
It was an ugly game for the Titans but somehow the Saints didn't blow them out. Ryan Tannehill had 16 of 34 passes completed with three interceptions. The interceptions would come on plays deep in Titans territory. Unfortunately the turnovers would result in six points for the Saints as they converted the turnovers into two field goals. Derrick Henry had 63 yards rushing on 15 carries. The Titans offense put up 285 total yards. Derek Carr made his Saints debut and had a good game. He completed 23 of 33 passes for 305 yards with a touchdown to Rashid Shaheed in the 3rd quarter. Carr did throw an interception but fortunately didn't result in points for the Titans. Jamaal Williams had 45 yards rushing on 18 carries. Chris Olave had 112 receiving yards with eight catches. New Orleans redzone efficiency was not quite there as they converted one of four trips inside the 20. For the Titans, they faltered and will stare at a 0-1 start. For the Saints, they get to a 1-0 start with a good win.

Next week:
Tennessee: vs LA Chargers
New Orleans: @ Carolina (Monday)

TW: 4-5; CV: 6-3

Green Bay 38, Chicago 20: TW: Packers; CV: Bears
Looks like the Packers still own the Bears despite not having that Aaron Rodgers guy at quarterback. Jordan Love had a quiet first half but turned it up in the 2nd half. He finished the game with 15 of 27 passes completed for 245 yards with three touchdown passes. Romeo Doubs caught two and Aaron Jones caught one of the three passes by Love. Aaron Jones rushed for 41 yards on nine carries. The Packers would only get 10 points in the 1st half. Justin Fields had his share of good play as he hit 24 of 37 passes for 216 yards with a touchdown pass to Darnell Mooney in the 3rd quarter. Fields would rush for 59 yards in the game but also tossed an interception. Roschon Johnson would get the other Bears touchdown. For the Packers, it is the first win in the Jordan Love era as they get to 1-0. For the Bears, they still can't escape with a win against the Packers as they go 0-1 in 2023.

Next week:
Green Bay: @ Atlanta
Chicago: @ Tampa Bay

TW: 5-5; CV: 6-4

LA Rams 30, Seattle 13: TW: Rams; CV: Rams
The Rams tamed the Seahawks on the road. Matthew Stafford made his return after an injury ravaged 2022 and put up some good numbers. He passed 24 of 38 balls for completion with 334 yards, with 119 receiving yards each went to Tutu (nice name buddy) Atwell and Puka (nice name as well buddy) Nacua. The scoring for the Rams were from their running game. Cam Akers had 29 yards rushing with a touchdown and Kyren Williams had two touchdown runs with 52 yards rushing. Overall the Rams saw much improved offensive production as they put up 426 total yards. Seattle had shown their promise in 2022 in their offense and in this game, it went quiet. Geno Smith completed 16 of 26 passes for 112 yards with a touchdown pass to DK Metcalf. Kenneth Walker rushed for 64 yards on 12 carries. In general the Seahawks were held to 180 total yards. It feels that the time of possession was a factor in the game as the Rams held the ball for nearly 40 minutes. The Seahawks defense being on the field was also a factor as the Rams converted 11 of 19 times on 3rd down. For the Rams, they move to 1-0 on the 2023 season and take care of business. For the Seahawks, they suffer a humiliating offensive showing as they go to 0-1.

Next week:
LA Rams: vs San Francisco
Seattle: @ Detroit

TW: 6-5; CV: 7-4

Las Vegas 17, Denver 16: TW: Raiders; CV: Raiders
An old school AFC West battle in the Mile High City. The Raiders got a new quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo. He finished with 20 of 26 completions for 200 yards with two touchdowns to Jakobi Meyers and an interception. The first touchdown to Meyers was from a goal-line pass to give the Raiders a 6-0 lead. The 2nd was from the same situation but from a 6-yard play. Josh Jacobs had 48 yards rushing on 19 carries. Las Vegas saw their team get 261 total yards on offense. Russell Wilson had a good game with 27 of 34 passes for 177 yards with two touchdowns to Cortland Sutton and Lilijordan Humphrey. The first touchdown was to Humphrey that came with the ball on a 5-yard toss that almost tied the game in the 1st quarter. Wil Lutz would miss the ensuing point after. Javonte Williams had 52 yards rushing. Samaje Perine had 41 yards rushing on eight carries. Denver almost had similar total yards but was just short by one yard. For the Raiders, they get to 1-0 in 2023. For the Broncos, their hopes of getting to a good start with new head coach Sean Payton will have to wait as they fall to 0-1.

Next week:
Las Vegas: @ Buffalo
Denver: vs Washington

TW: 7-5; CV: 8-4

Miami 36, LA Chargers 34: TW: Dolphins; CV: Chargers
Wow this game had it all. Tua Tagovailoa completed 28 of 45 passes for 466 yards with three touchdowns and had one interception in the game. Tyreek Hill had two and River Cracraft (unique name buddy) had one of the three passes that Tua gave to them. Raheem Mostert had 37 yards rushing with a touchdown run. Overall, the Dolphins offense torched the Chargers defense for 536 total yards. Justin Herbert had 23 of 33 passes completed for 228 yards with a touchdown pass to Donald Parham Jr. Herbert would also rush into the endzone for six with 18 yards on the ground. Austin Ekeler rushed for 117 yards with a touchdown run. Joshua Kelley too would get some love as he rushed in for a touchdown while getting 91 yards rushing. The Chargers would hit a field goal with 3:57 left in the game that put the game at a 34-30 advantage for the Chargers. Tua would have to go the distance to win. He would see his favorite target Tyreek Hill catch a ball on a 4-yard play. Despite getting the touchdown, the game was still at a two-point difference. The Chargers would fail to get past their own territory. For the Dolphins, they sneak out of LA with a 1-0 start. For the Chargers, they gave their fans some hope for an upset but would falter as they go to a 0-1 start.

Next week:
Miami: @ New England
LA Chargers: @ Tennessee

TW: 8-5; CV: 8-5

Philadelphia 25, New England 20: TW: Patriots; CV: Patriots
Rain was pouring in New England but the skies brighten for the Patriots fans as their hero Tom Brady had his jersey retired on Tom Brady Day. The defending NFC champs had their offense stifled after the hot start 1st quarter. Philadelphia scored 16 points in the opening period. Jalen Hurts hit 22 of 33 passes for 170 yards with a touchdown pass to Devontae Smith in the 1st quarter. Kenneth Gainwell had 54 yards rushing with 14 carries. The Eagles offense would be held to 251 total yards. AJ Brown was the Eagles leading receiver with seven catches for 79 yards. Mac Jones had a rough first quarter but would recover well afterwards. He completed 35 of 54 passes for 316 yards with three touchdown passes and had an interception that was a pick-six by Eagles defender Darius Slay. Hunter Henry caught one and Kendrick Bourne had two of the three passes that Jones tossed to them. Newest Patriot Ezekiel Elliott had 29 rushing yards while Rhamondre Stevenson had 25 yards rushing on 12 carries. The Patriots offense saw a much improved production with newest offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien. The Pats redzone efficiency was better as they went three for five inside the 20. The 3rd down conversion rate of 5 for 15 on 3rd down will need to be improved. For the Eagles, they stave off the Patriots and go to 1-0 on the year. For the Patriots, the loss will hurt but their offense has improved and will improve as 2023 will go on but their record of 0-1 will hurt as much.

Next week:
Philadelphia: vs Minnesota (Thursday)
New England: vs Miami

TW: 8-6; CV: 8-6

Dallas 40, NY Giants 0: TW: Cowboys; CV: Cowboys
A blowout of epic proportions in East Rutherford. Dak Prescott completed 13 of 24 passes for 143 yards while rushing for eight yards. Tony Pollard, Dallas' newest #1 back, rushed for 70 yards with two touchdown runs. Kavontae Turpin would also get a touchdown on the ground with 14 rushing yards. Overall, the Cowboys offense only got 265 yards total. The Cowboys defense took advantage of the mistakes that the Giants would give them. The Rout would begin in earnest with a blocked field goal that was recovered by Noah Igbinoghene for a 46-yard score. The scoring would continue with a Daniel Jones short pass that was grabbed by cornerback Daron Bland for a 22-yard touchdown. Daniel Jones would obviously not play his best game of his career. He completed 15 of 28 passes for 104 yards with two interceptions. Jones would get some yardage from his legs as he rushed for 43 yards. Saquon Barkley had 51 yards rushing. The Giants would only gain 171 total yards in the game. Virtually most stats were heavily in favor for the Cowboys. For the Cowboys, they move to 1-0 in 2023 in convincing fashion. For the Giants, the quest to continue their stellar season from last year falters as they go to 0-1.

Next week:
Dallas: vs NY Jets
NY Giants: @ Arizona

TW: 9-6; CV: 9-6

Buffalo 16, NY Jets 22 (F/OT): TW: Bills; CV: Jets
Jets fans can't have anything nice can they? The debut of Aaron Rodgers in a Jets uniform lasted for four plays. The veteran would leave the game on a cart due to a possible calf injury. Zach Wilson would play in his stead and did alright in the circumstances. Wilson tossed 14 of 21 passes for 140 yards with a touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson who somehow willed the ball to him in a possible Catch of the Year nominee. Breece Hall had a good game as he rushed for 127 yards with 10 carries. The overtime period would see special teams player Xavier Gipson play hero as he ran a punt return for the winning score. The Jets on offense would put up 289 yards on offense. Buffalo would have a trying time on offense as Josh Allen put up 29 of 41 passes for 236 yards with a touchdown pass to Stephon Diggs. The quarterback would see a lot of green as he threw three interceptions. Jared Cook had 46 yards rushing while Josh Allen had 36 yards rushing. Buffalo would put up 314 total yards of offense. According to Jets head coach Robert Saleh that Rodgers suffered an achilles injury that could be a big loss to the Jets this season. For the Bills, they drop a weird game to the Jets with a 0-1 record. For the Jets, they manage to pull off a win despite losing their obvious starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers with a 1-0 record.
