NFL 2019 Week 7 Picks

Hello readers! Another week of National Football League action is coming upon us once more. Last week was a good week for me with a 9-5 record, rebounding from my atrocious 5-10 record the week before. Hopefully this week can continue that good vibes. This post will include a NFL 100 spotlight and the picks to the games. Let's get to work!

NFL 100: A Spotlight

There have been many hits throughout the history of the NFL. Like Lawrence Taylor's hit on Joe Theisman in 1985, Vontaze Burfict's hit on Antonio Brown in 2015, or George Atkinson's hit on Lynn Swan in 1975. I don't think any other hit can match the one that sent the victim out cold, and wouldn't play a snap two seasons later. The hit Chuck "Concrete Charlie" Bednarik put on Frank Gifford.

By 1960, Chuck Bednarik was the stuff of legends. He had arguably the greatest nickname in NFL history with "Concrete Charlie" based off his offseason job as a concrete salesman. He played both center and linebacker and by the time he retired in 1962, he would be the last player in NFL history to play two positions throughout his entire career. He was the last of the "Sixty Minute Men."

In week 9 of the 1960 season, The 7-1 Eagles traveled to the Bronx to take on the 5-2-1 Giants. It was in Yankee Stadium on November 20th, the temperature around kickoff was 49 degrees Farenheit.  The rivalry was certainly there between the two teams.

The Giants started George Shaw at quarterback who would finish the game with 196 yards with an interception. Frank Gifford would throw a pass for 13 yards (probably a sign of foreshadowing with that 13). Gifford would get only 24 yards rushing for the G-men. Pat Summerall would hit only one of four field goals in the game.

The Eagles started Norm Van Brocklin, superstar in the 1950's who led the Rams to success now was with the Eagles in his final season. Brocklin would finish the day with 236 yards passing with a touchdown. Ted Dean would finish the game with 34 yards rushing.

Joe Morrison of the Giants would get the only scoring touchdown for the Giants on a 1-yard rush. It was the only scoring in the first quarter, 7-0 Giants. Pat Summerall would hit a 26-yard field goal in the 2nd quarter to give the Giants a 10-0 lead. By the 3rd quarter, Tommy McDonald would catch a pass from Norm Van Brocklin for a 35-yard touchdown, 10-7 Giants. In the 4th quarter, both teams would get scores. Bobby Walston would hit a 12-yard field goal to tie the game at 10-10. Jimmy Carr of the Eagles would recover a fumble to return it to the endzone for a 35-yard touchdown to give the Eagles a 17-10 lead.

With not much time left, the Giants had to move the ball quickly to possibly get a touchdown and a game-tying point after attempt. George Shaw would find Frank Gifford in the middle of the field. Gifford was attempting to get out of bounds. Chuck Bednarik had other plans.

It is quite possibly the only play where the force of Bednarik's body could muster that much force to drive Gifford to the ground. Gifford's neck snapped upon contact with the ground. The Eagles would recover the ball and the famous photo of Bednarik hovering over Gifford's body lives in NFL history.

In the end, Gifford would recover from the injury but wouldn't play football again until 1962. The Giants wouldn't recover and finished the season with a 6-4-2 record. The Eagles would go on to to finish the season with a 10-2 record and win the NFL Championship against the Green Bay Packers. That game would be the only loss in the postseason career of head coach Vince Lombardi. The Eagles wouldn't win another championship until Super Bowl LII when they beat the Patriots.

The Picks!

Week 7 of the the NFL regular season starts in Denver, Colorado and ends in East Rutherford, New Jersey. There will be four teams on a bye: Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There will be a Thursday night game, eight early games, three late games, a Sunday night game, and a Monday night game. FOX will have the double-header while CBS will have the single, regional game. Let's get started!

Kansas City (4-2) @ Denver (2-4) (FOX/NFL Network): TW: Chiefs; CV: Chiefs

The Chiefs lost to the Texans and the Broncos beat the Titans last week. Kansas City's defense will need to put a stop to the Broncos running game and Joe Flacco if they have a shot to win this. Time of possession hasn't been in the Chiefs favor. I don't trust Joe Flacco to get it done while Patrick Mahomes should get back on track to his former self.

Miami (0-5) @ Buffalo (4-1) (CBS): TW: Bills; CV: Bills

The Dolphins lost to the Redskins and the Bills were on a bye last week. Miami had their best shot to get a win last week now they go on the road against an underrated Bills team. Buffalo's defense is legit and I like their running game. Miami could keep it interesting but I can't trust Ryan Fitzpatrick to get it done.

LA Rams (3-3) @ Atlanta (1-5) (FOX): TW: Rams; CV: Rams

Both teams lost last week as the Rams lost to the 49ers and the Falcons lost to the Cardinals. The Rams got a boost to their secondary with Jalen Ramsey so certainly I can expect the Rams to rebound well with a good performance on defense. Jared Goff has been suspect so far this season but I feel the Rams will get it done on the road against a terrible defense in Atlanta.

Minnesota (4-2) @ Detroit (2-2-1) (FOX): TW: Vikings; CV: Vikings

The Vikings beat the Eagles while the Lions lost to the Packers last week. The Lions look certainly hungry after that horrible officiated game on Monday night. This game will be close but I think the Vikings will pull it off with a balance on offense with Dalvin Cook on the ground and Kirk Cousins in the air.

Oakland (3-2) @ Green Bay (5-1) (CBS): TW: Packers; CV: Packers

The Raiders were on a bye and the Packers beat the Lions last week. Cardinal Viking is picking the Packers for the first time this week. Oakland has played some steady football so far this season. The limited weapons for Aaron Rodgers could play into effect for this game but I think the Raiders will need to respect their running game. Overall I trust Green Bay's defense over the Raiders, especially their linebackers.

San Francisco (5-0) @ Washington (1-5) (FOX): TW: 49ers; CV: 49ers

Both teams got wins as the 49ers beat the Rams and the Redskins beat the Dolphins. Jet lag could be a factor for San Francisco but they have weapons on both sides of the ball and I can't trust the Redskins enough to give them the dub. San Francisco's defense is legit and they can keep up with the limited weapons of Case Keenum.

Jacksonville (2-4) @ Cincinnati (0-6) (CBS): TW: Bengals; CV: Jaguars

Both teams lost last week as the Jaguars lost to the Saints and the Bengals lost to the Ravens. The Bengals looked promising against the Ravens last week and the loss of Jalen Ramsey for the Jaguars could be a factor in me picking Cincy this week. I mean they're bad but they can't be possibly Miami Dolphins bad. Could be an upset win. If Joe Mixon can get it going, the Bengals have a decent shot to win as the Jaguars run defense is 25th this season.

Houston (4-2) @ Indianapolis (3-2) (CBS): TW: Texans; CV: Texans

The Texans beat the Chiefs and the Colts were on a bye last week. Rest could be a factor in the game as the Colts come off from a bye. Both teams have good offenses, I'm taking the Texans based off of their defense. Houston's offensive line and defense has been suspect for quite a while but I think it'll be Houston that comes out of it. It will be a close game as Vegas has the Colts as a 1-point favorite.

Arizona (2-3-1) @ NY Giants (2-4) (FOX): TW: Giants; CV: Cardinals

The Cardinals won against the Falcons and the Giants lost to the Patriots last week. Both teams have solid offenses with two young quarterbacks. Saquon Barkley is expected to return and if he can return to his former self, I like the Giants chances in this game to win. This game could come down to whoever is on their last drive with less than two minutes left. I'll take the Giants at home.

LA Chargers (2-4) @ Tennessee (2-4) (CBS): TW: Chargers; CV: Chargers

Both teams lost last week as the Chargers lost to the Steelers and the Titans lost to the Broncos. Ryan Tannehill will start for the Titans in this game and it could be a factor in a possible win for them. The Chargers need to get back into winning form as their pass protection broke down against Pittsburgh. I think they'll get it done with Melvin Gordon on the ground.

Baltimore (4-2) @ Seattle (5-1) (FOX): TW: Seahawks; CV: Ravens

Both teams got wins last week as the Ravens beat the Bengals and the Seahawks beat the Browns. The best game of the week. Both teams have really great offenses, both of them are top-5 in total offense. The game will come down to stops and turnovers. Whoever can take opportunities will come out on top. Wouldn't be surprised if both quarterbacks stretch their legs and go for big rushes.

New Orleans (5-1) @ Chicago (3-2) (FOX): TW: Bears; CV: Bears

The Saints beat the Jaguars and the Bears were on a bye last week. Whoever starts at quarterback for the Bears could be a factor in the game. Chase Daniel has done okay in his stead of Mitchell Trubisky who could return in this game. I like the Bears defense in their matchup against the Saints offense. I'll take the Monsters of The Midway.

Philadelphia (3-3) @ Dallas (3-3) (NBC): TW: Eagles; CV: Eagles

Both teams lost last week as the Eagles lost to the Vikings and the Cowboys lost to the Jets. The game is a real toss-up. Both teams have shown no signs of being good on both sides of the ball. I would take the Cowboys normally but I don't trust Jason Garrett to make any choices if this game is close. Philadelphia seems a bit more stable but they need their running game to be back to stride. Carson Wentz and their defense will need all the help they can get.

New England (6-0) @ NY Jets (1-4) (ESPN): TW: Patriots; CV: Patriots

Both teams got wins last week as the Patriots beat the Giants and the Jets beat the Cowboys. Jets looked better with Sam Darnold last week but I don't trust them to put up 20-30 points against this Patriots team who looked meager on offense. I'll take the Pats based on past history against the Jets and Brady should have a good game against them.

NFL 2019 Week 6 Recap

Hello readers! Another week of National Football League action has passed. The week that was featured some impressive games, some close games, and some not so close. As well as some that had me shocked and awed. In this post I'll talk about a NFL 100 Spotlight and the recap of the games. Let's get to work!

NFL 100: A Spotlight

The coaching tree, the tree that shows how well a coach can pass down his knowledge to his assistants to eventually succeed in their own way. There is only one man, whose coaching tree spans from the 1950's to the present day. Whose revolutionary schemes to the passing game helped put the American Football League to the American spotlight. That man was Sid Gillman.

Gillman was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 26, 1911. He would go on to play and coach at Ohio State under head coach Sam Willaman. It is from there that Gillman would develop his offense. It would be a long rise from college to the pros.

He got his first head coaching gig at University of Miami (Ohio) and would finish with a 31-6 record in 4 seasons with a victory in the Sun Bowl. His next gig was at Cincinnati where he would lead the Bearcats to three conference titles and a bowl game but would lose in the Sun Bowl against West Texas State. He would finally get his shot at the pros with the Los Angeles Rams.

In his first season with the Rams, Gillman led them to a 8-3-1 record and a berth in the NFL Championship game against the Cleveland Browns. They would lose the game. He would finish his tenure in LA with a 28-31-1 record and was fired after the 1959 season.

He would become the first head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, a new team in the newly minted American Football League. His teams were dominant in the new league as the Chargers would be in the AFL Championship game in five of six seasons. He would achieve his first and only pro football championship in the 1963 AFL Championship game, beating the Boston Patriots 51-10, utilizing on a strong running game with some help from quarterback John Hadl to his favorite target Lance Alworth.

While he may have won only one league championship and no Super Bowl wins, Sid Gillman's accomplishments really come down to the knowledge that he bestowed to his assistants. Such people like Al Davis, Chuck Noll, Chuck Knox, Dick Vermeil, George Allen, and Don Coryell. You can trace any head coach in the NFL to Sid Gillman. For example, John Harbaugh, head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, was an assistant to Andy Reid, who was an assistant to Mike Holmgren, who was an assistant to Bill Walsh, who was an assistant to Al Davis, who was an assistant to Sid Gillman. Any sort of passing offense can be traced back to the Gillman offense. That's really and truly his legacy to the game.

Week 6 Recap

Last week was a terrible week for me. Probably my worst week for quite a while. Road teams are having a great season so far and I've been stuck in that "Homedog always takes the cake" mentality. Let's see if this week was better for me.

NY Giants 14, New England 35: TW: Patriots; CV: Patriots

The game started off poorly for the Pats but their defense and special teams really kept the Giants from getting anything going. Daniel Jones threw the ball for 161 yards for a touchdown and three interceptions. The Giants running game didn't even get above double digits so its not even noteworthy. Tom Brady threw the ball for 334 yards with an interception. Brady would run it in for two touchdowns while Sony Michel was the leading rusher with 86 yards. At least Brady can take solace knowing that he beat the Giants for probably the last time in his career.

All-time series: Patriots lead series 7-6

Next week: NY Giants: @ Arizona; New England: @ NY Jets

TW: 1-0; CV: 1-0

Carolina 37, Tampa Bay 26: TW: Panthers; CV: Panthers

While the Buccaneers held Christian McCaffrey to his lowest stats of the season, it didn't help that Jameis Winston had five interceptions in the game. Kyle Allen threw the football for 227 yards with two touchdowns. Christian McCaffrey ran the ball for 31 yards on 22 carries for a touchdown. Curtis Samuel also got a rushing touchdown on a 8-yard play. Joey Slye would hit three for five field goals. Jameis Winston threw the ball for an even 400 yards with a touchdown and five interceptions. Ronald Jones and Dare Ogunbowale would score rushing touchdowns for the Bucs as well. Just imagine how well the Buccaneers can play if Winston threw less than one interception.

All-time series: Panthers lead series 24-15

Next week: Carolina: Bye; Tampa Bay: Bye

TW: 2-0; CV: 2-0

New Orleans 13, Jacksonville 6: TW: Saints; CV: Saints

Teddy Bridgewater has done well with Drew Brees out. Bridgewater finished the game with 240 yards with a touchdown. Latavius Murray would have the leading rusher honors with 44 from the ground. Gardner Minshew threw the ball for a measly 163 yards with an interception. Leonard Fournette would get 72 yards from the ground. Saints defense is pretty legit.

All-time series: Saints lead series 5-2

Next week: New Orleans: @ Chicago; Jacksonville: @ Cincinnati

TW: 3-0; CV: 3-0

Philadelphia 20, Minnesota 38: TW: Vikings; CV: Vikings

Carson Wentz played a pretty nice game but ultimately turnovers costed them in this game. Wentz threw the ball for 306 yards for two touchdowns and an interception. Philly's running game couldn't get much threw the Vikings defense as Jordan Howard mustered only 49 yards. Kirk Cousins had another great game with 333 yards for four touchdowns and an interception. Stephon Diggs had 167 receiving yards and three touchdowns from that. Dalvin Cook got a rushing touchdown on 41 yards from the ground but it would be Alexander Mattison who got leading rusher honors with 63. NFC East is going to come down to whoever wins nine games.

All-time series: Vikings lead series 15-14

Next week: Philadelphia: @ Dallas; Minnesota: @ Detroit

TW: 4-0; CV: 4-0

Washington 17, Miami 16: TW: Dolphins; CV: Dolphins

The game came down to a dropped pass on a 2-point conversion with six seconds left. Case Keenum started for the Redskins, and he threw the ball for 166 yards for two touchdowns. Adrian Peterson reminded us of his prime with 118 yards from the ground. Josh Rosen started for Miami but was benched with a meager 85 yards passing with two interceptions. Ryan Fitzpatrick gave the Dolphins some life with 132 yards passing with a touchdown. Kenyan Drake was the leading rusher for the Dolphins with 40 while Kalen Ballage got a rushing touchdown with seven yards rushing. Washington finally got a dub.

All-time series: Dolphins lead series 9-6

Next week: Washington: vs San Francisco; Miami: @ Buffalo

TW: 4-1; CV: 4-1

Houston 31, Kansas City 24: TW: Chiefs; CV: Chiefs

Houston controlled the ball for nearly 40 minutes in this game. Can't win much if you can't stop people. DeShaun Watson threw the ball for 280 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Carlos Hyde gave up a fumble on the first play from scrimmage but would make up for it with a 116 yards from the ground with a touchdown while Watson ran it in for two scores with 40 yards rushing. DeShaun Watson threw the ball for 273 yards for three touchdowns and an interception. LeSean McCoy got only 44 yards for the game on 8 carries. To beat the better offense is to keep it from doing its thing and that's keeping it off the field.

All-time series: Chiefs lead series 6-5

Next week: Houston: @ Indianapolis; Kansas City: @ Denver (Thursday night)

TW: 4-2; CV: 4-2

Seattle 32, Cleveland 28: TW: Seahawks; CV: Seahawks

The Browns still don't get it, sadly. Russell Wilson had another great game with 295 passing yards with two touchdowns. He would also get a rushing touchdown. Chris Carson was the leading rusher with 124 yards with a touchdown. Baker Mayfield threw for 249 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. Nick Chubb was the leading rusher for the Browns with 122 yards with two touchdowns.

All-time series: Seahawks lead series 13-6

Next week: Seattle: vs Baltimore; Cleveland: Bye

TW: 5-2; CV: 5-2

Cincinnati 17, Baltimore 23: TW: Ravens; CV: Ravens

Lamar Jackson dominated the Bengals with his arm and his legs. Andy Dalton threw the ball for 235 yards with an interception. Dalton would run it in for a score. Joe Mixon could only get 10 yards from the ground on eight carries. Lamar Jackson threw the ball for 236 yards with zero touchdowns. Jackson was the leading rusher with 152 and a touchdown. Mark Ingram ran the ball for 52 yards with a touchdown.

All-time series: Ravens lead series 24-23

Next week: Cincinnati: vs Jacksonville; Baltimore: @ Seattle

TW: 6-2; CV: 6-2

San Francisco 20, LA Rams 7: TW: Rams; CV: Rams

The Rams scored on their first possession, and didn't get much else in this game. Jimmy Garoppolo got 243 yards passing with an interception. He would get a rushing touchdown. Matt Breida would get 43 yards rushing with a touchdown. Jared Goff could only get 78 yards passing with zero touchdowns. Robert Woods would get the only touchdown for the Rams. San Francisco seems to be legit.

All-time series: 49ers lead series 70-67-3

Next week: San Francisco: @ Washington; LA Rams: @ Atlanta

TW: 6-3; CV: 6-3

Atlanta 33, Arizona 34: TW: Falcons; CV: Falcons

The game came down to a shootout and the Falcons couldn't stop Kyler Murray. Matt Ryan threw the ball for 356 yards for four touchdowns. Devonta Freeman got 88 rushing yards but got no touchdowns. Kyler Murray carved the Falcons defense for 340 yards for three touchdowns. David Johnson got a rushing touchdown with 34 yards for the day. Overall, the game shows how much the Falcons need a coaching change with a defensive mind like Dan Quinn.

All-time series: Cardinals lead series 17-15

Next week: Atlanta: vs LA Rams; Arizona: @ NY Giants

TW: 6-4; CV: 6-4

Dallas 22, NY Jets 24: TW: Cowboys; CV: Cowboys

It wasn't a sexy matchup on paper but it was somewhat of a thrilling game. Dak Prescott threw the ball for 277 yards with zero touchdowns. Ezekiel Elliot ran the ball for 105 yards with a touchdown. Sam Darnold threw the ball for 238 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Le'Veon Bell ran the ball for 50 yards with a touchdown on the day. How long will Dallas keep giving Jason Garrett a job? God only knows.

All-time series: Cowboys lead series 7-5

Next week: Dallas: vs Philadelphia; NY Jets: vs New England

TW: 6-5; CV: 6-5

Tennessee 0, Denver 16: TW: Broncos; CV: Broncos

The Titans had a rough time on both sides of the ball and the Broncos defense definitely had a great day fantasy wise. Marcus Mariota threw the ball for 144 yards with an interception and Ryan Tannehill didn't help the cause as he threw for two interceptions. Derrick Henry couldn't get much either with 28 yards from the ground. Joe Flacco had 177 yards passing with an interception. Phillip Lindsey had the only offensive touchdown and had 70 yards on the ground.

All-time series: Titans lead series 23-18

Next week: Tennessee: vs LA Chargers; Denver: vs Kansas City (Thursday night)

TW: 7-5; CV: 7-5

Pittsburgh 24, LA Chargers 17: TW: Steelers; CV: Chargers

Devlin Hodges got his first win as a starter while playing manager behind a great defensive effort from Pittsburgh. Hodges threw the ball for 132 yards for a touchdown and an interception. Benny Snell was the leading rusher with 75 yards but James Conner got a touchdown with 41 yards rushing. Phillip Rivers threw the ball for 320 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. LA's running game didn't get much stats wise as Melvin Gordon ran the ball for 18 yards.

All-time series: Steelers lead series 24-10

Next week: Pittsburgh: Bye; LA Chargers: @ Tennessee

TW: 8-5; CV: 7-6

Detroit 22, Green Bay 23: TW: Packers; CV: Lions

The game wasn't pretty for both sides but it would be Green Bay that would get the Lions dominance off their back. Matthew Stafford did fine with his 265 yards passing with zero touchdowns. Kerryon Johnson would get the only touchdown for Detroit from a 1-yard rush. Matt Prater would hit five field goals. Aaron Rodgers wasn't quite at his best but would finish the game with 283 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Jamaal Williams was the leading rusher with 104 yards. Mason Crosby would hit three field goals, including the game winner from 23 yards.

All-time series: Packers lead series 104-72-1

Next week: Detroit: vs Minnesota; Green Bay: vs Oakland

TW: 9-5; CV: 7-7

NFL 2019 Week 6 Picks

Hello readers! Another week of National Football League action is coming! Last week was probably one of my worst weeks in terms of straight up pick 'ems. Hopefully this week will be better. In this post, I will do a NFL 100: A Spotlight and my picks for the games. Let's get to work!

NFL 100: A Spotlight

When it comes to players throughout the 100 years of the NFL, no other player has had a better career under the circumstances of the situation he was in. That and his post-playing career is marred by one thing "Did he murder his wife?" and a lot of people have animosity towards him because of that. You cannot deny that his legacy to the game of football is that of greatness. I am of course talking about O.J. Simpson.

He did well in high school football, and when he went to the University of Southern California in 1967, he displayed his greatness there. Although he only played for two seasons with USC he rushed for 1,543 yards in 1967 and 1,880 yards in 1968. He was that good. Good as in when the 1968 Philadelphia Eagles attempted to tank to get him, even though the Eagles would eventually win two of their last three games to finish with a record of 2-12. The Buffalo Bills would ultimately have the #1 pick in the 1969 Draft.

OJ Simpson would play for 11 seasons in the NFL and while his career didn't get going in the first few years due to decisions from his head coaches. Decisions like using him as a blocker or a receiver instead of him as a running back. He would only average 622 yards per season. In 1972, the Bills hired Lou Saban. Saban would make Simpson a central figure in the Bills offense. Simpson would rush for 1,251 yards for six touchdowns. His greatness was just the beginning.

In 1973, OJ Simpson would have one of the greatest seasons for running backs in NFL history. He rushed for 2,003 yards in a 14-game schedule. He is the only player to reach that mark in a 14-game season. His yards per game total was at 143.1, an NFL record that still stands. He was named NFL MVP for 1973.

The playoffs had eluded him due to ineptitude of the Bills during the 1970's. His quarterback often changed throughout his time at Buffalo. In 1974, the Bills reached the playoffs with 1,125 yards rushing from Simpson. In the AFC Divisional playoff between the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was held to 49 yards on 15 carries. He would not sniff a playoff berth for the rest of his career.

While he almost reached for 2,000 yards in 1975, he finished with 1,817 with a career best 16 touchdowns. One of his last great moments in greatness was on Thanksgiving 1976 when he ran the ball for 273 yards (at that time an NFL record) in a game against the Detroit Lions. The Bills would lose the game 27-14.

He was traded to hometown San Francisco to play for the 49ers in 1978. His last two seasons for the 49ers was marred by injuries and he wouldn't quite get back to his 1,000+ rushing yard mark that he had earlier in his career. He would retire shortly after the 1979 season. Imagine him playing in the West Coast Offense under Bill Walsh, if only his body could last that long.

Even though he played on a bad team in the Buffalo Bills, his stats definitely lift his greatness. If he had those numbers behind an offensive line like the Miami Dolphins or the Oakland Raiders, he probably would have a few Super Bowls in his resume. Essentially, OJ Simpson was the offense for the Buffalo Bills, he has to be the greatest running back in the 1970's.

Week 6 Picks

The sixth week of the National Football League regular season starts in Foxboro, Massachusetts and finishes in Green Bay, Wisconsin. There will be 14 games played. The week includes a Thursday night game, one early morning game, six early games, four late games, a Sunday night game, and a Monday night game. The Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, Oakland Raiders, and Indianapolis Colts have bye weeks this week. CBS will have the double-header and FOX will have the single, regional game. Here come the picks!

NY Giants (2-3) @ New England (5-0) (FOX/NFL Network): TW: Patriots; CV: Patriots

The Giants lost to the Vikings and the Patriots beat the Redskins last week. These two teams certainly have a history in playing in big games. Tom Brady's two of his three Super Bowl losses were in the hands of the Giants in Super Bowl XLII and XLVI. Unfortunately the Giants are banged up and Tom Brady is still upright. I feel the best chance for Brady and company to stick it to the Giants for those losses has to be this game.

Carolina (3-2) @ Tampa Bay (2-3) (NFL Network): TW: Panthers; CV: Panthers

The Panthers beat the Jaguars and the Buccaneers lost to the Saints. If you have NFL Network and are willing to wake up early in the morning, this game will be on for you to enjoy. It will be in London for the second consecutive week. Tough game to call but I feel the Panthers will win it close with Christian McCaffrey having a great game with Kyle Allen at quarterback.

New Orleans (4-1) @ Jacksonville (2-3) (CBS): TW: Saints; CV: Saints

The Saints beat the Buccaneers and the Jaguars lost to the Panthers. Minshewmania lost last week and might've taken some thunder from me picking them this week. I'm going with the more experienced quarterback in Teddy Bridgewater in this game. Another close game to call. Could backfire on me.

Philadelphia (3-2) @ Minnesota (3-2) (FOX): TW: Vikings; CV: Vikings

Both teams got a win last week as the Eagles beat the Jets and the Vikings beat the Giants. Kirk Cousins will need to take advantage of a meager Eagles pass defense as the Eagles rush defense is #1 this season. The Vikings defense will keep this game close and the place will be loud. I'll take the Vikes. Big games usually mean bad things for Kirk Cousins.

Washington (0-5) @ Miami (0-4) (FOX): TW: Dolphins; CV: Dolphins

The Redskins lost to the Patriots and the Dolphins were on a bye last week. It's the Toilet Bowl of all Toilet Bowls, the "Suck For Tua Bowl" and then some. The Dolphins are well rested and the Redskins have an interim head coach that will more than likely start Dwayne Haskins. Sorry Dolphins fans but I think your team will get a win this season.

Houston (3-2) @ Kansas City (4-1) (CBS): TW: Chiefs; CV: Chiefs

The Texans beat the Falcons and the Chiefs lost to the Colts last week. I feel that Patrick Mahomes will rebound after the offense had a timid game last week. Will certainly be a shootout as both offenses are good. I can't trust the Texans enough as they are somewhat inconsistent. First team to 30+ will get a dub. Hopefully Patrick Mahomes is alright.

Seattle (4-1) @ Cleveland (2-3) (FOX): TW: Seahawks; CV: Seahawks

The Seahawks beat the Rams and the Browns lost to the 49ers last week. Baker Mayfield hasn't been the same quarterback this season for some reason and I feel that he's putting too much pressure on himself and not legislating the game to others. Seattle is pretty good in rush defense so it will be difficult for the Browns to get a run game going. Russell Wilson has been playing stellar as well so I'll take Seattle.

Cincinnati (0-5) @ Baltimore (2-3) (CBS): TW: Ravens; CV: Ravens

The Bengals lost to the Cardinals and the Ravens beat the Steelers last week. Lamar Jackson didn't play his best last week but the Bengals are terrible on both sides of the ball, especially on the offensive line. I think the Ravens defense will have a field day against them. Could expect Mark Ingram to have a great day against the Bengals 31st ranked rush defense.

San Francisco (4-0) @ LA Rams (3-2) (FOX): TW: Rams; CV: Rams

The 49ers beat the Browns and the Rams lost to the Seahawks last week. San Francisco is coming into the game with a shorter week than the Rams. I think we'll learn a lot about how the Rams offense will handle itself after last week's loss. The pressure is definitely on San Francisco to prove themselves to be the best team in the conference. Could be a shootout.

Atlanta (1-4) @ Arizona (1-3-1) (FOX): TW: Falcons; CV: Falcons

The Falcons lost to the Texans and the Cardinals beat the Bengals. It will come down to which Falcons defense comes out against Arizona. I really don't trust the Falcons defense to come out and get it done but Arizona's defense is very suspect as well, including their pass defense. If David Johnson for the Cardinals doesn't play then I feel Atlanta will come away with a close win.

Dallas (3-2) @ NY Jets (0-4) (CBS): TW: Cowboys; CV: Cowboys

The Cowboys lost to the Packers and the Jets lost to the Eagles last week. Dallas has come out flat against the Saints and the Packers. Fortunately they play a terrible Jets team for the marquee game (yeah marquee game, smh CBS/NFL). Dallas gets back on track with a win. Unless Joe Namath, Matt Snell, and Don Maynard come out and play in their prime selves, then Dallas would be in trouble.

Tennessee (2-3) @ Denver (1-4) (CBS): TW: Broncos; CV: Broncos

The Titans lost to the Bills and the Broncos won against the Chargers. Philip Lindsey had a great game last week against the Chargers. He and the Broncos running backs will need to have another good week against a Titans team that is 14th in rush defense. Hopefully Von Miller can continue to have success rushing Marcus Mariota who has yet to throw an interception this season.

Pittsburgh (1-4) @ LA Chargers (2-3) (NBC): TW: Steelers; CV: Chargers

Both teams lost last week as the Steelers lost to the Ravens and the Chargers lost to the Broncos. One would assume that Mason Rudolph won't play based on the hit that he suffered last week. If he doesn't start then Devlin Hodges will get the nod. I don't know much from Hodges so I'll go on a whim and take the Steelers in this one. If the Steelers defense let Phillip Rivers have a good game then this will get ugly.

Detroit (2-1-1) @ Green Bay (4-1) (ESPN): TW: Packers; CV: Lions

The Lions were on a bye and the Packers beat the Cowboys last week. Detroit has surprised quite a few people this season. Matthew Stafford will have a huge test against an improved Packers defense. I don't see the Lions winning the game because of Aaron Rodgers and the offense doing their own thing and the Lions will have to play catch up all game. If Detroit's offense can keep the Packers defense on the field for a majority of the game, then the Lions have a shot.

NFL 2019 Week 5 Recap

Hello readers! The fifth week of the National Football League's regular season ended. The week that was brought some drama, some surprises, and some games that weren't surprises. The surprises might've costed me big in terms of picks this week, we shall have to see how much damage there was as well as if Cardinal Viking beat me this week. In this post, I'll talk about a rather chilly NFL 100 spotlight, and a recap of the games.

NFL 100: A Spotlight

This past Sunday was the 27th all-time meeting between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys. The two teams throughout their history have produced some great games. Games like, Rodgers to Cooks, The Dez Catch Game in 2015, or Favre vs The Triplets matchups in the 1990's. By the time the two teams met in the 5th overall meeting, the rivalry would be etched into NFL lore.

Head coaches Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi were assistant head coaches for Jim Lee Howell of the New York Giants in the 1950's. Landry was the defensive coordinator while Lombardi was the offensive coordinator. Lombardi left a powerhouse in the Giants for the head coaching job at Green Bay in 1959. Landry would leave the Giants to become the first head coach of the Cowboys in 1960. The two coaches played in games that were mostly dominated by Green Bay but by the mid 1960's the Cowboys were starting to catch up. The first meaningful matchup was the 1966 NFL Championship game held in the Cotton Bowl. Lombardi would outlast his counterpart in a 34-27 game, en route to a Green Bay victory in Super Bowl I.

The Packers 1967 campaign was a harder road to travel. They lost Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung to the expansion draft, they lost many key people to injury throughout the regular season, and age was starting to catch up to the Packers. The Packers finished the year with a 9-4-1 record.

The 1967 Dallas Cowboys season remained as a building off of the year before. They finished the year with a 9-5 record under the arm of Don Meredith and a powerful running game. They held a 7-2 record before finishing the season winning two of their last five games.

The NFL that year moved to a 4-team, four division, two conference system where the winners of the four divisions would play in the playoffs. There was the Eastern Conference that had the Capitol and Century divisions, and the Western Conference that had the Coastal and Central divisions. The four division winners were: Dallas (Capitol), Cleveland (Century), Green Bay (Central), and Los Angeles (Coastal). The Packers would beat the Rams 28-7 at Milwaukee County Stadium and the Cowboys beat the Browns 52-14 at the Cotton Bowl.

The game was played on December 31st 1967, the place was Lambeau Field. It would be the coldest New Years Eve in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The game itself would be dubbed the Ice Bowl because of its adverse weather conditions. The weather that day was sunny with a -15 (-26 celsius) temperature at kickoff. The temperature would get to around -12 but the weather conditions would deteriorate as the game would go on. There was a tarpaulin put in around the field that was removed before gametime. The $80,000 heating coil system underneath the field would malfunction and while there was moisture on the field, the field would succumb to the cold and crust over as the game would go on.

Green Bay would strike first, with some help from two Dallas penalties, on a 8-yard pass play from Bart Starr to Boyd Dowler, giving the Packers a 7-0 lead. The Packers drive was a 16-play, 83 yard drive that included a 17-yard reception from Starr to Donny Anderson. It was the only scoring in the first quarter.

The Packers scoring would continue after a defensive stop. The drive included a 13-yard run from Ben Wilson and a six-yard run from Travis Williams before Bart Starr found Boyd Dowler again for a 43-yard score giving Green Bay a 14-0 lead.

Dallas' famed Doomsday Defense would step up and cause two turnovers that would lead to 10 points for Dallas. George Andrie would cause a Starr fumble that would end in a seven-yard touchdown. Dallas would recover another turnover on a Willie Wood fumble that would end up with a Cowboys field goal that would cut the lead to 14-10 Packers at halftime.

While there was no scoring in the 3rd quarter, the Cowboys would finally have some success in sustaining drives as they had yet to get a first down on an offensive drive. The Packers just didn't find ways to close out Dallas for good. The obvious homefield advantage of playing in the cold wasn't totally an advantage when its colder than hell.

Dallas would finally have an offensive touchdown on a 50-yard pass play from Dan Reeves to Lance Rentzel on a halfback option play. The Packers defense wasn't ready for it. It was the first play in the 4th quarter giving Dallas a 17-14 lead. The Packers had a chance to tie the game with a Don Chandler field goal, but would miss from 40 yards.

Dallas would get two first downs before the Packers defense held its ground on the Cowboys 38-yard line, forcing Dallas to punt on 4th down. Willie Wood recovered the punt for a nine-yard gain. The ball was spotted at the 32-yard line with 4:50 left on the clock. The wind chill was now at -50 Farenheit with both teams under fatigue and the field conditions deteriorating.

The first play was a six-yard pass from Starr to Anderson. Recent acquisition Chuck Mercein would gain seven yards on a run play to the Packers 43 yard line. Bart Starr found Boyd Dowler for a 13-yard pass play to the Dallas 44 yard line. Dowler would leave the field after a Cornell Green tackle, Max McGee would replace him. An attempted halfback option from Donny Anderson resulted in a nine-yard loss. Anderson would answer back with a 12-yard and a nine-yard pass plays that moved the ball to the Dallas 30-yard line. Chuck Mercein would get a reception that resulted in a 20-yard gain to the Dallas 11-yard line. Mercein would again find an open spot on 54-Give, a play that made Dallas linebacker Bob Lilly follow Gale Gillingham. Lombardi called it "the sucker play," the result was a eight-yard run to the Dallas 3-yard line. Donny Anderson would attempt to get into the endzone but was stopped short on the Cowboys 1-yard line. Anderson attempted twice to get into the endzone. With 3rd and Goal looming, the Packers called their final timeout, with 16 seconds left.

The play was Brown Right 31 Wedge, a run play that was designed to be given to Chuck Mercein, but to some Packers players, they knew that Starr would keep the ball. It was a risky play, if the Packers failed they would have a clock that was counting down as they used their final timeout, and there was no guarantee that the Packers could get a play off in time on 4th down. Success on the play would be determined on a double team. Once the play got off, right guard Jerry Kramer and center Ken Bowman made a key block on Jethro Pugh that would give Starr enough space to give the Packers a 20-17 lead. Don Chandler would get the extra point that would give the Packers the 21-17 lead. The Packers were once again NFL Champions for the 3rd consecutive year, their 11th overall.

Super Bowl II would end up being a cake walk for the Packers who would romp on the AFL's Oakland Raiders 33-14, giving the Packers their 2nd Super Bowl championship. Bart Starr would win his 2nd consecutive Super Bowl MVP. The game was the end of an era in Green Bay and the beginning of futility would result in two playoff appearances from 1968 to 1991.

In the aftermath, the game would be Vince Lombardi's last home playoff win as Super Bowl II would be his last win in his career with Green Bay. Green Bay would return to the playoffs in 1972 but would lose to the eventual NFC champion Washington Redskins. They made an appearance in the "Playoff Bowl" in 1982 getting a playoff win against the St. Louis Cardinals before losing to the Dallas Cowboys. Their fortunes wouldn't change until 1992 when Mike Holmgren and Brett Favre entered the scene, and the rest is history.

For the Cowboys they would return to the playoffs in 1968 and 1969 but would lose to the Cleveland Browns. In 1970, they made their first Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl V but would lose to the Baltimore Colts. They finally got the monkey off their back with a victory in Super Bowl VI against the Miami Dolphins, giving Dallas their first championship. They would be a force to be reckoned with ever since.

While most of the original CBS broadcast of the Ice Bowl is lost to time, the original radio broadcast of the game still very much exists. The video I'm including has footage of the game for the NFL's Game of the Week, the audio features the radio talents of Ted Moore and Chuck Johnson of WTMJ, the Packers flagship network, with some audio of the Cowboys radio broadcast of KLIF featuring Bill Mercer and Blackie Sherrod.

Week 5 Recap:

LA Rams 29, Seattle 30: TW: Rams; CV: Rams

The game itself was less dependent on Jared Goff's arm but the Rams defense has to be certainly suspect now. Jared Goff threw the ball for 395 yards for a touchdown and an interception. Todd Gurley was more involved in the game, getting 51 rush yards for two touchdowns. Russell Wilson had the game of his life, completing 17 of 23 passes for 268 yards for four touchdowns. Chris Carson had 118 yards from the ground for zero touchdowns. The game came down to a missed field goal from Greg Zuerlein. It was a 44-yard attempt.

All-time series: Seahawks lead series 24-19

Next week: LA Rams: vs San Francisco; Seattle: @ Cleveland

TW: 0-1; CV: 0-1

Chicago 21, Oakland 24: TW: Bears; CV: Bears

The game was a surprise to most as the classic Bears defense was supposed to stomp out the Raiders offense. Chase Daniel threw the ball for 231 yards for two touchdowns and two interceptions. David Montgomery could only muster 25 yards from the ground. Derek Carr would throw for 229 yards for zero touchdowns but it would be Josh Jacobs who would run over the Bears defense, getting 123 yards from the ground for two touchdowns. The Raiders are a good road team, in spite that they had to go play the game in England.

All-time series: Raiders lead series 8-7

Next week: Chicago: Bye week; Oakland: Bye week

TW: 0-2; CV: 0-2

Buffalo 14, Tennessee 7: TW: Titans; CV: Bills

The "Titans Picking Carousel" continues. I pick the Titans, they lose, when I pick against them, they win. Josh Allen had a bounceback game with 217 yards from the air for two touchdowns and an interception. Frank Gore put up some good numbers with 60 rushing yards. Marcus Mariota could only get 183 yards passing for zero touchdowns. Derrick Henry would get the only touchdown for the Titans on a 1-yard play, giving him 78 yards from the ground. Seriously, Fuck Tennessee!

All-time series: Titans lead series 28-19

Next week: Buffalo: bye week; Tennessee: @ Denver

TW: 0-3; CV: 1-2

Jacksonville 27, Carolina 34: TW: Jaguars; CV: Panthers

I probably drank too much of the Minshewmania kool-aid (probably had too many hairs from Minshew's mustache) but the Jaguars couldn't stop the McCaffrey machine. Gardner Minshew threw the ball for 374 yards for two touchdowns. Leonard Fournette had another 100-yard plus rushing day with 108 yards for a touchdown. Kyle Allen for the Panthers threw the ball for 181 yards for a touchdown. It would be Christian McCaffrey's 176 rushing yards and 61 receiving yards (2 rushing touchdowns and 1 receiving touchdown) that would give the Panthers the edge in the game. He has to be in the MVP consideration. Let alone being a fantasy football star!

All-time series: Panthers lead series 4-3

Next week: Jacksonville: vs New Orleans; Carolina: vs Tampa Bay (London)

TW: 0-4; CV: 2-2

New England 33, Washington 7: TW: Patriots; CV: Patriots

The Redskins kept this to a close game but eventually the Patriots got this to a score that most people thought they would get to. Tom Brady threw the ball for 348 yards for three touchdowns and an interception. Sony Michel was the leading rusher for the Patriots with 91 yards and a touchdown. Colt McCoy started for the Redskins but wouldn't amount to much with 119 passing yards for zero touchdowns and an interception. Steven Sims would score the only Redskins touchdown on a 65-yard running play.

All-time series: Redskins lead series 6-5

Next week: New England: vs NY Giants; Washington: @ Miami

TW: 1-4; CV: 3-2

Arizona 26, Cincinnati 23: TW: Bengals; CV: Cardinals

Kyler Murray got his first win in his career in the epicest of of epic Toilet Bowl games. I made up that word by the way. Kyler Murray finished the game with 253 yards for zero touchdowns while throwing zero interceptions. He also ran the ball for 91 yards with a touchdown and Chase Edmonds ran the ball for 68 yards for a touchdown as well. Andy Dalton had a better game with 262 yards passing for two touchdowns. Joe Mixon got 93 yards on the ground for the Bengals. The game came down to a Zane Gonzalez 31-yard field goal that gave the Cards a win.

All-time series: Series tied 6-6

Next week: Arizona: vs Atlanta; Cincinnati: @ Baltimore

TW: 1-5; CV: 4-2

Minnesota 28, NY Giants 10: TW: Vikings; CV: Vikings

The Vikings offense got back on the right foot against an average Giants defense. Kirk Cousins threw for 306 yards for two touchdowns. Dalvin Cook ran the ball for 132 yards for zero touchdowns. The Vikings would also score on a safety. Daniel Jones threw the ball for 182 yards for a touchdown and an interception. The Giants didn't get much help from their running backs as Jon Hilliman was the leading rusher for 20 yards. At least one Minnesota named team can beat a New York named team (sorry Twins fans, I had to do it).

All-time series: Vikings lead series 17-12

Next week: Minnesota: vs Philadelphia; NY Giants: @ New England

TW: 2-5; CV: 5-2

Baltimore 26, Pittsburgh 23 (F/OT): TW: Steelers; CV: Steelers

A rivalry was reborn today. The game was a classic Baltimore-Pittsburgh battle, with tough defense and scoring not by the 50's. Lamar Jackson had 161 yards passing with a touchdown and three interceptions. He also had 70 rushing yards. Mark Ingram got a touchdown while running the ball for 44 yards. Before he left the game in the 3rd quarter after a vicious hit from Earl Thomas, Mason Rudolph threw the ball for 131 yards for a touchdown. James Conner got 55 rushing yards for a touchdown. Craig Boswell would hit three field goals in the game. Justin Tucker would score the game-winning field goal in overtime on a 46-yard field goal.

All-time series: Steelers lead series: 28-23

Next week: Baltimore: vs Cincinnati; Pittsburgh: @ LA Chargers

TW: 2-6; CV: 5-3

Atlanta 32, Houston 53: TW: Texans; CV: Texans

The game lacked defense but for those who enjoy high-scoring games, then this was the cream of the crop. Matt Ryan threw for 330 yards for three touchdowns and an interception. The Falcons running attack was somewhat limited in the game as Devonta Freeman would only get 30 yards on 11 carries. DeShaun Watson however had a really good game with 426 yards passing with five touchdowns. Carlos Hyde got some scoring with a rushing touchdown as well as his 60 yards rushing for the game. The Falcons managed to keep DeAndre Hopkins at bay but they forgot to cover Will Fuller who had 217 receiving yards for three touchdowns. Ouch Atlanta.

All-time series: Texans lead series 3-2

Next week: Atlanta: @ Arizona; Houston: @ Kansas City

TW: 3-6; CV: 6-3

Tampa Bay 24, New Orleans 31: TW: Saints; CV: Buccaneers

Any chance of Teddy Bridgewater faltering back to sub-par play was diminished in this one. Jameis Winston threw the ball for 204 yards for two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Ronald Jones was the leading rusher for the Bucs with 35 but Peyton Barber would get 32 yards rushing and a touchdown. Teddy Bridgewater threw the ball for 314 yards for four touchdowns and an interception. Alvin Kamara provided some spark in the running game with his 62 yards from the ground. I started the Saints defense in fantasy, but much like most of this week, it was a dud.

All-time series: Saints lead series 34-21

Next week: Tampa Bay: vs Carolina (London); New Orleans: @ Jacksonville

TW: 4-6; CV: 6-4

NY Jets 6, Philadelphia 31: TW: Eagles; CV: Eagles

The Eagles kept it close for the first half but began to not toy with its prey and put the beating that most people figured they would. Luke Falk started for New York who would throw for 120 yards for two interceptions. Le'Veon Bell was the leading rusher for them with 43 but it would be Vyncent Smith who would get New York out of their touchdown drought on a trick play. Carson Wentz threw the ball for 189 yards for a touchdown. Jordan Howard got 62 yards from the ground with a touchdown.

All-time series: Eagles lead series 11-0

Next week: NY Jets: vs Dallas; Philadelphia: @ Minnesota

TW: 5-6; CV: 7-4

Denver 20, LA Chargers 13: TW: Chargers; CV: Broncos

The Chargers were off in this game, not sure why though. Denver did well on both sides of the ball and took turnover opportunities to heart. Joe Flacco had 182 yards for a touchdown and an interception. Philip Lindsey had 114 yards rushing for a touchdown. Philip Rivers could only muster 211 yards passing for two interceptions, zero touchdowns mind you. Melvin Gordon returned to the Chargers with 31 yards rushing. Maybe the Chargers defense is not as good as we thought.

All-time series: Broncos lead series: 67-52-1

Next week: Denver: vs Tennessee; LA Chargers: vs Pittsburgh

TW: 5-7; CV: 8-4

Green Bay 34, Dallas 24: TW: Cowboys; CV: Cowboys

In my defense, I thought the Cowboys offense would play angry but instead they reverted back to their last week play. Aaron Rodgers would throw the ball for 238 yards for zero touchdowns and zero interceptions. It would be Aaron Jones that provided the offense for the Packers, with 107 yards rushing for four touchdowns. Dak Prescott would throw the ball for 463 yards for two interceptions and three interceptions. Ezekiel Elliot would run the ball for 12 carries for 62 yards and a touchdown. Should've picked Green Bay if the Cowboys laid an egg.

All-time series: Packers lead series: 20-17

Next week: Green Bay: vs Detroit (Monday night); Dallas: @ NY Jets

TW: 5-8; CV: 8-5

Indianapolis 19, Kansas City 13: TW: Chiefs; CV: Chiefs

The Colts got their revenge on the Chiefs. Jacoby Brissett played game manager with his 151 yards passing with an interception. Marlon Mack ran the ball all over the Chiefs defense with 132 yards though Brissett would score the only offensive touchdown for Indy. Patrick Mahomes still managed to put up 321 yards passing for a touchdown. The Chiefs running game got not much going as Damien Williams got 23 yards rushing.

All-time series: Colts lead series 17-10

Next week: Indianapolis: Bye week; Kansas City: vs Houston

TW: 5-9; CV: 8-6

Cleveland 3, San Francisco 31: TW: Browns; CV: 49ers

Matt Breida got things going a couple of minutes into the game and the 49ers didn't let up. Baker Mayfield had a pretty pitiful game with 100 yards passing and two interceptions. Nick Chubb had a good game with 87 yards rushing. Austin Seibert would get the only points for the Browns with a field goal. Jimmy Garoppolo had 181 yards passing for two touchdowns. Matt Breida and Tevin Coleman combined for 211 rushing yards for two touchdowns. Oh Browns, even when you try to do some good, you fail. It hurts.

All-time series: Browns lead series 12-7

Next week: Cleveland: vs Seattle; San Francisco: @ LA Rams

TW: 5-10; CV: 9-6
