Hello readers! Another week of National Football League action has come and gone. The week that was featured such Christmas goodies like the Buffalo Bills returning the fruitcake to Bill Belichick, Baker Mayfield throwing gifts to opposing jerseys and the Cowboys giving their fans false hope. In this post, I'll do a recap of the week's action. Let's get to work!
Week 16 Recap
San Francisco 17, Tennessee 20: TW: 49ers; CV: Titans
The Titans may be banged up but they keep finding ways to win. Jimmy Garoppolo completed 26 of 35 passes for 322 yards with a touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk. The passer would also throw two passes for interception. Jeff Wilson rushed the ball for 45 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown. Deebo Samuel rushed for 32 yards on five carries. Ryan Tannehill completed 22 of 29 passes for 209 yards with a touchdown pass to AJ Brown. Jeremy McNichols rushed for 31 yards on seven carries. Donta Freeman would score a rushing touchdown as well as had 17 yards rushing on nine carries. Tennessee would outscore San Francisco 20-7 in the 2nd half and have used their 52nd different starter this season.

San Francisco: vs Houston
Tennessee: vs Miami
Cleveland 22, Green Bay 24: TW: Packers; CV: Packers
Baker Mayfield gave out gifts to not just his own team. The Browns quarterback would complete 21 of 36 passes for 222 yards with two touchdowns but had four interceptions. Some of them were questionable ones as some were possibly pass interference. Nick Chubb would find paradise against the Packers rush defense as he ran for 126 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown. His longest run was for 27 yards. Aaron Rodgers was solid again in this game as the passer completed 24 of 34 passes for 202 yards with three touchdowns. One of those touchdowns would be the one that would break Brett Favre's franchise touchdown record at 443 touchdowns. Aaron Jones rushed for 66 yards on 12 carries. Safe to say the Browns have been a disappointment this season but as I felt in the preseason, they'd have a down year.
TW: 1-1; CV: 2-0

Cleveland: @ Pittsburgh
Green Bay: vs Minnesota
Indianapolis 22, Arizona 16: TW: Colts; CV: Cardinals
Was one of the best games that Carson Wentz has had as a Colt. Wentz completed 18 of 28 passes for 225 yards with two touchdowns. Jonathan Taylor was magical in this one as he rushed for 108 yards on 27 carries with a 43-yard run being his longest. The Colts would also get a safety on a Kyler Murray pass that was flagged for intentional grounding. Kyler Murray would have a good day as the passer completed 27 of 43 passes for 245 yards with a touchdown pass for Antoine Wesley as well as 74 rushing yards. Chase Edmonds would score a rushing touchdown as well as adding 56 yards rushing. Arizona's special teams would be a factor in this game as Matt Prater would hit 1 of 3 field goals and 1 of 2 point afters.

Indianapolis: vs Las Vegas
Arizona: @ Dallas
Buffalo 33, New England 21: TW: Bills; CV: Bills
The Buffalo Bills got their revenge on the Patriots. Josh Allen was a one-man wrecking crew as the passer accounted for 314 passing yards with three touchdown passes as well as 64 yards rushing. Devin Singletary would get a score as well as rushing for 39 yards. The Bills defense would take advantage of interceptions thrown at them. Mac Jones was not that great as the passer finished with 14 of 32 pass completions for 145 yards with two interceptions. Damien Harris would account for the offensive scoring as the runner accounted for three touchdowns and 103 rushing yards. Mac Jones had 33 yards rushing. The Bills looked dead a few weeks ago but they're still alive.
TW: 3-1; CV: 3-1
Next week:
Buffalo: vs Atlanta
New England: vs Jacksonville
Baltimore 21, Cincinnati 41: TW: Bengals; CV: Bengals
Joe Burrow had a good day at the office. Baltimore was without Lamar Jackson due to injury and Tyler Huntley due to COVID protocol and it was down to 3rd stringer Josh Johnson. Johnson was signed as a free agent 10 days ago. The passer completed 28 of 40 passes for 304 yards with two touchdowns with an interception. Not a bad outing for someone who was out of football a few weeks ago. Devonta Freeman would get 17 yards rushing on six carries with a touchdown run. Joe Burrow would have a spectacular day as the sophomore quarterback threw for 525 yards with four touchdowns. Burrow broke the single-game franchise record set by Boomer Esiason who had 490 yards in a game against the Los Angeles Rams back in 1990. Joe Mixon had 65 yards rushing while scoring a touchdown. With the Ravens and Browns losing, the Bengals control their own destiny in the AFC North.
TW: 4-1; CV: 4-1
Next week:
Baltimore: vs LA Rams
Cincinnati: vs Kansas City
Detroit 16, Atlanta 20: TW: Falcons; CV: Falcons
Sorry Lions, no victory for you. Tim Boyle would get the start over Jared Goff as Goff would be placed into COVID reserve/protocol. Boyle would complete 24 of 34 passes for 187 yards with a touchdown but also had a costly interception. Jamaal Williams rushed the ball for 77 yards on 19 carries. Detroit would rely on their kicker Riley Patterson in this one a lot as the kicker would hit a perfect 3 for 3 on field goals. Detroit had the ball for over 38 minutes in this game. Matt Ryan completed 18 of 24 passes for 215 yards with a touchdown. Cordarelle Patterson rushed for 14 yards with a touchdown. Mike Davis had a 28-yard, seven carries day. Virtually ever statistic pointed towards Detroit but in this league, points matter more than just stats.
TW: 5-1; CV: 5-1
Next week:
Detroit: @ Seattle
Atlanta: @ Buffalo
Jacksonville 21, NY Jets 26: TW: Jaguars; CV: Jaguars
Typical Jaguars. You pick them and they lose. Trevor Lawrence was better in this game as he completed 26 of 39 passes for 280 yards. Dare Ogunbowale rushed for 57 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown. Lawrence would also have 37 yards rushing on six carries. The Jaguars would also get a score from an unlikely source, their left tackle Will Richardson would recover a Lawrence fumble and run it in for a score. Big boy touchdown. Zach Wilson had okay numbers but didn't really show flashes of brilliance. He would have 14 of 22 passes for completion for 102 yards with a touchdown pass as well as had 91 yards rushing with a touchdown. Jets runningback Michael Carter rushed for 118 yards on 16 carries.
TW: 5-2; CV: 5-2
Next week:
Jacksonville: @ New England
NY Jets: vs Tampa Bay
LA Chargers 29, Houston 41: TW: Chargers; CV: Chargers
When it mattered most you play down to competition didn't ya Chargers. Justin Herbert completed 27 of 35 passes for 336 yards with a touchdown pass to Josh Palmer as well has had two interceptions. Justin Jackson rushed for 64 yards with two touchdowns. Davis Mills completed 21 of 27 passes for 254 yards with two touchdowns and didn't have an interception in the game. Shocking I know. Rex Burkhead had a spectacular day on the ground as the former Patriot rushed for 149 yards with two touchdowns. Houston would score 24 points in the 4th quarter whereas they had only scored 17 in the first three quarters. Bad loss for the Chargers and a Chiefs win would mean that Kansas City is the AFC West champs.
TW: 5-3; CV: 5-3
Next week:
LA Chargers: vs Denver
Houston: @ San Francisco
LA Rams 30, Minnesota 23: TW: Rams; CV: Vikings
It wasn't a pretty game but the Rams clinched a playoff spot. Matthew Stafford looked bad in this game as he completed 21 of 37 passes for 197 yards with a touchdown pass to Odell Beckham Jr but had three passes grabbed by the purple people eaters defense. Sony Michel would run over the Vikings defense as he rammed his way to 131 yards rushing on 27 carries with a touchdown run. LA's special teams would get a boost as Brandon Powell would get a kick-six on a 61-yard return. Kirk Cousins would complete 27 of 38 passes for 315 yards with a touchdown but had an interception in the game. Alexander Mattison rushed for 41 yards with a touchdown. The NFC West is still in question but a playoff berth is the first step to reaching the big dance for the Rams.
TW: 6-3; CV: 5-4
Next week:
LA Rams: @ Baltimore
Minnesota: @ Green Bay
NY Giants 10, Philadelphia 34: TW: Eagles; CV: Eagles
The Eagles would stay on task and crush the Giants en route to a possible playoff berth. Jake Fromm would start his first NFL game and it was not a spectacular one. The former Georgia Bulldog would complete 6 of 17 passes for 25 yards with an interception. Mike Glennon would relieve him and finished with a meager 17 of 27 passing for 93 yards with a touchdown but had an interception. Saquon Barkley would get only 32 yards rushing on 15 carries. Jalen Hurts would have a better game from the air and not on the ground. He would complete 17 of 29 yards with 199 yards with two touchdown passes. Miles Sanders would rush for 45 yards on seven carries. Boston Scott rushed for 41 yards with a touchdown. Both teams would go into halftime on a 3-3 tie and would go onto a 31-7 scoring burst.
TW: 7-3; CV: 6-4
Next week:
NY Giants: @ Chicago
Philadelphia: @ Washington
Tampa Bay 32, Carolina 6: TW: Buccaneers; CV: Buccaneers
Tampa Bay achieved its first NFC South title since 2007. Antonio Brown would also make his return. Tom Brady completed 18 of 30 passes for 232 yards with a touchdown pass. Keyshawn Vaughn would have a good day running the football with 70 yards rushing on seven carries with a touchdown. Ronald Jones would have the workload with 65 yards rushing with a touchdown run on 20 carries. Antonio Brown would catch 10 balls for 101 yards. Cam Newton would start again but wouldn't produce a lot of results as he completed 7 of 13 passes for 61 yards with an interception. Sam Darnold would replace him but wouldn't fare much better as he had 15 of 32 passes completed for 190 yards passing. Newton did have a decent day running the football with 42 yards rushing on five carries with a 33-yard run being his longest. Carolina is 2-10 since they started 3-0 to start the season.
TW: 8-3; CV: 7-4

Tampa Bay: @ NY Jets
Carolina: @ New Orleans
Chicago 25, Seattle 24: TW: Seahawks; CV: Bears
Snow game in the Emerald City! Nick Foles would get the start over Justin Fields who had been dealing with an ankle injury. Foles was quiet in the game but would come to life in the 4th quarter. Foles would complete 24 of 35 passes for 250 yards with a touchdown pass to Jimmy Graham with 1:01 left in the game. David Montgomery would run for 45 yards with a touchdown on 21 carries. Khalil Herbert would rush for 21 yards with a touchdown run on two carries. Chicago would try to go for a 2-point conversion and would convert it on a Damiere Byrd catch. Russell Wilson would complete 16 of 27 passes for 181 yards with two touchdowns to DK Metcalf and Gerald Everett. Rashad Penny had a solid day running the football as he ran for 135 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown.
TW: 8-4; CV: 8-4
Next week:
Chicago: vs NY Giants
Seattle: vs Detroit
Denver 13, Las Vegas 17: TW: Raiders; CV: Raiders
It was a skiddish game but the Raiders would pull it out in the 2nd half. Drew Lock would get the nod at quarterback over Teddy Bridgewater who is dealing with a neck injury. The passer completed 15 of 22 passes for 153 yards. Javontae Williams would score the only touchdown for Denver while getting 12 yards rushing on seven carries. All of Denver's 13 points would come in the 2nd quarter. Derek Carr would have a sluggish start but would overcome the troubles with 20 completions out of 25 attempts for 201 yards with a touchdown pass but also did have an interception that was deflected and landed in the arms of Bradley Chubb. Josh Jacobs would find success in the ground game as the runner had 129 yards rushing on 27 carries. Peyton Barber would get 22 yards rushing with a touchdown run. Las Vegas is still alive.
TW: 9-4; CV: 9-4
Next week:
Denver: @ LA Chargers
Las Vegas: @ Indianapolis
Pittsburgh 10, Kansas City 36: TW: Chiefs; CV: Chiefs
The game might've been a bit closer if the vaunted Steelers defense knew how to tackle and the offense didn't start so slow. Ben Roethlisberger would complete 23 of 35 passes for 159 yards with a touchdown but had an interception. The touchdown would come on garbage time and the interception would come on a badly executed flea flicker. Mason Rudolph would 5 of 8 passes for 35 yards. Najee Harris has been the bright spot for the Steelers this season as the runner had 93 yards on 19 carries. Patrick Mahomes would make the Steelers defense mince meat as he hit 23 of 30 passes for 258 yards with three touchdowns. Damien Williams rushed for 55 yards on 11 carries. Derrick Gore would rush for 43 yards with 12 carries. Clyde Edwards-Helaire would hit 27 yards rushing with a touchdown. Very unlikely now that the Steelers will make the playoffs. Darn shame.

Washington 14, Dallas 56: TW: Cowboys; CV: Cowboys
Largest margin of victory in the Washington-Dallas rivalry in favor of the Cowboys. Taylor Heinicke would start the game for the Football Team and he didn't look good. He had 7 of 22 passes completed for 121 yards with a touchdown pass and two interceptions. One of those interceptions would go to Trevon Diggs who caught his 11th interception in the season. Kyle Allen would replace him and would find better luck as he had 8 of 10 passes completed for 67 yards with a touchdown. Jaret Patterson would rush for 33 yards on nine carries. Antonio Gibson would rush for 29 yards on six carries. Dak Prescott looked like a man on a mission in this game as he had 28 of 39 passes completed for 330 yards with four touchdowns. Cooper Rush would relieve him late in the game and had 70 yards passing with a touchdown as well. Ezekiel Elliot would rush for 37 yards with a touchdown. Tony Pollard provided 34 yards rushing.

Miami 20, New Orleans 3: TW: Dolphins; CV: Saints
Miami has gone from 1-7 to 8-7 baby! Tua Tagovailoa would complete 19 of 26 passes for 198 yards with a touchdown pass to Jaylen Waddle who would have 10 catches for 92 receiving yards in the game. He would have a pass that would get picked off. Duke Johnson rushed for 39 yards on 13 carries in the game. Phillip Lindsay rushed for 36 yards on 13 carries. Ian Book would get his first career start and NFL debut in this game. The former Notre Dame product would hit 12 of his 20 passes for 135 yards with two interceptions. One of the interceptions would be grabbed by Dolphins free safety Nik Needham for a touchdown. Alvin Kamara would have to get the workload in this game as the runner had 52 yards rushing on 13 carries. Wasn't an impressive game but a win is a win if you're a Dolphins fan.
